Is ‘The Office’ coming back?

Is Steve Carrell returning as his iconic character Michael Scott?

The Office is the hit sitcom that helped launch the careers of Steve Carrell and John Krasinski, and arguably was the one and only draw to sign up for the streaming service Peacock early on in its existence.

With its continued popularity via streaming, it may not surprise you to hear that there is a new show in the works that has close ties to the workplace comedy from the late aughts and will undoubtedly attempt to bank on that proximity.

While it’s not exactly a reboot, there will be some unexpected characters from The Office making a return for this new production, which comes from the mind of the man who adapted the show for American television, Greg Daniels, alongside Nathan For You co-creator Michael Koman.

The new Greg Daniels/Michael Koman The Office universe show, explained

We can all breathe a collective sigh of relief because no one will be attempting to remake The Office any time soon (some things you just shouldn’t touch, okay?). In a much more interesting approach, Daniels and Koman are developing a new series set in the same universe as Dunder Mifflin, and featuring the same documentary crew that spent years capturing the mundane lives of Michael, Jim, Pam, Dwight, and company.

The crew is picking up their cameras once again and taking them over to the newsroom of a historic daily Midwestern newspaper that is slowly wilting in the digital age. Its publisher is now trying to revive it with volunteer reporters. Per the press release, Peacock has sent the project straight to series but has yet to reveal a title or release date.

We do know, however, that Domhnall Gleeson (About TimeEx-Machina) and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus) will be leading an ensemble cast and that the series begins filming in July. I don’t know about you guys, but that is one fascinating combination of leading actors.

We know this from experience — there isn’t a single workplace that’s funnier than a newsroom. Sorry, Dunder Mifflin, Abbott Elementary, and Pawnee’s Parks Department.
