Missed flight, bomb threat, airport chaos, and a manhunt all in one.]]>
<![CDATA[

A fake bomb threat at Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) on Thursday, June 5, 2025, caused a six-hour delay for Spirit Airlines flight 2145 heading to Los Angeles and led to a large security response from the TSA. The situation began after 23-year-old Charles Robinson, who had missed his flight, reportedly called Spirit Airlines and claimed there was a possible bomb threat. 283e2z

As reported by People, Robinson, who had been told at the gate that he needed to rebook his flight, called Spirit Airlines around 6:25 AM. He said he had information about someone planning to set off a bomb on flight 2145. He described this person, saying they would try to sneak the bomb past TSA checkpoints without being caught. His statement led to an immediate reaction from airport officials.

The threat set off a major security operation. Flight 2145, which had already left the gate and was moving toward the runway, was brought back to a secure area away from the terminal. All engers and crew were safely taken off the plane and brought back to the terminal. Bomb-sniffing dogs and FBI agents were sent to carefully search the plane and the surrounding areas.

The thorough search found no explosives. While engers were kept in the terminal and had to go through security screening again, the FBI started an investigation to find out who made the threatening call. Using phone records, investigators quickly linked the call to Robinson. He was arrested later that evening when he came back to the airport trying to board another flight to Los Angeles.

During questioning, Robinson confessed to making the false bomb threat, clearly stating that he hoped the delay would give him enough time to catch his original flight instead of having to rebook. This ission was recorded in a court document.

Robinson was then charged with knowingly spreading false information about an explosive, which is a serious federal crime. He appeared in federal court and was released on bail while waiting for his next court date on June 27.

The incident caused major problems for engers. One enger, Joci Moore, spoke to CBS News about the experience, explaining how the initial delay was followed by a three-hour wait on the plane before everyone was allowed off. engers were then held in the terminal for another two hours before they could get back on the cleared plane.

This incident mirrors a previous event where an American Airlines flight to India received a bomb threat, leading to an emergency diversion to Rome. Similarly, TikToker Daniel Larson faced federal charges after making a series of bomb threats targeting various institutions, including the White House.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan released a statement criticizing Robinson’s actions, “No American wants to hear the words ‘bomb’ and ‘airplane’ in the same sentence. Making this kind of threat undermines our collective sense of security and wastes valuable law enforcement resources.”

Similarly, the FBI Detroit Field Office’s Special Agent in Charge, Cheyvoryea Gibson, said, “Anyone who threatens to bomb an aircraft and endanger public safety will be swiftly investigated and brought to justice.”

The agency isn't necessarily doing a great job.]]>
<![CDATA[

With the reelection of Donald Trump, many government programs are about to be slashed. One proposed cut that’s getting a lot of attention is the movement to abolish the Transportation Security istration (TSA), something that U.S. Representative Lauren Boebert s, assuming she knows what it is. Oh, and in the midst of all this, someone duped the agency and stowed away on a plane to Paris from JFK.

The abolishment thing is not that extreme of a position if you think about it. No one likes the TSA. No one goes to the airport, waits in that long line, and thinks, “you know what? This rules!” So yes, the abolition of everyone’s least favorite government agency is not the most divisive issue.

Senator Mike Lee from Utah seems to be leading the charge right now. Lee made a string of remarks on Dec. 16 urging his Republican colleagues to consider the proposal, along with ending the Affordable Care Act. That one will probably be tougher considering it makes healthcare almost affordable for millions of Americans.

“Congress should abolish TSA,” Lee said on X. “If Congress somehow can’t abolish it, Congress should at least (1) privatize it, and then (2) require what remains of TSA to truly compete with private security contractors.” Ohhhh. Make it private! Because that worked so well with prisons.

Regardless, Boebert loves the idea. She’ll jump on anything for a little attention. Who needs your own ideas when you can just be a pawn in someone else’s game?

Some quick history: The TSA was created mere weeks after 9/11 when the country was awash in grief and anger. These days, it’s known as an agency that, according to some critics, oversteps its authority and continually violates the rights of citizens. There are some people, like political scientist Rachel Bitecofer, who don’t think getting rid of it is a good idea.

Is the TSA effective? Back in 2016, VOX wrote an article called “The TSA is a waste of money that doesn’t save lives and might actually cost them.” The argument presented is that the TSA is trying to fix a “non-problem.” An excerpt:

“Despite some very notable cases, airplane hijackings and bombings are quite rare. There aren’t that many attempts, and there are even fewer successes. That makes it hard to judge if the TSA is working properly — if no one tries to do a liquid-based attack, then we don’t know if the 3-ounce liquid rule prevents such attacks.”

One time, Homeland Security officials tried to smuggle guns and bombs through TSA checkpoints 70 different times. They succeeded 67 times. That’s more than a 94% success rate. To underscore this, a woman named Svetlana Dali simply snuck her way through TSA and onto a plane, without a ticket or a boarding .

She got through TSA by using a lane for airline employees and then simply walked past Delta agents at the gate. She hid in the bathrooms and would move from one to another and stay in there a long time during the flights. She was caught by French police when she landed.

She was extradited to the U.S. and given an ankle monitor, but she cut it off and hopped on a Greyhound to Canada. She didn’t make it, but that’s very resourceful. Maybe Boebert could learn a thing or two from her.
