You wouldn’t think of King Charles as the kind of guy to be a movie buff, and yet it seems the U.K. monarch still manages to find time during his busy schedule to sit down and watch some spectacular kino. Perhaps it’s his way of escaping all the royal drama that’s constantly going on. 1e6w19

Director Christopher Nolan and his wife, film producer, Emma Thomas, both recently received a knighthood and a damehood from the king for their contributions to film, ing other honorees like Sam Mendes (American Beauty, 1917), Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave, Blitz), and Stephen Frears (The Queen, Victoria & Abdul).

Not only did the pair get the chance to meet and have a conversation with Charles, but he also confirmed that he had indeed seen Nolan’s latest film, Oppenheimer, and that he very much enjoyed it. Speaking on the matter, Thomas said, “He’d seen Oppenheimer, and he liked it, so that was very gratifying to hear.” Clearly, Charles is a fan of Nolan and Thomas’ work – sorry to disappoint the Barbie fans out there.

Like most, Charles was a big fan of Oppenheimer 5s5d6i

The 3-hour-long biopic starring Cillian Murphy recounts the life story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist responsible for the creation of the nuclear bomb. It makes sense that the king would like it, considering the film received near universal praise upon its release last year.

Oppenheimer was nominated for 13 Oscars and took home seven, including the big one — Best Picture — as well as statuettes for Nolan, Thomas, their leading man, and Robert Downey Jr. in the ing Actor category. It’s arguably one of Nolan’s most successful movies to date, and half of one of the biggest cultural phenomenons of the 2020s.

Revealing more about their discussion with Charles, Nolan commented on how it felt knowing the king had seen their movies.

It was very nice that he knew our work and was aware of it, and, yes, he was hoping that I would take this as encouragement to do more of it.”

Now I want to know if Charles has seen the rest of Nolan’s filmography. It’s hard to imagine him sitting down and watching The Dark Knight trilogy. Was he able to wrap his head around Inception? What did he think of Tenet? Has he seen Memento? All questions that need answering.

Anyway, there you have it, King Charles is an Oppenheimer boy, his words of praise towards Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas reveal which side of the camp he’s on in regard to the Barbenheimer debate. However, it’s not actually been confirmed whether or not he’s even seen the Barbie movie. It doesn’t really seem like his sort of thing, but then again we can’t judge a book by its cover, maybe he did see Barbie, and maybe he really liked it too.

Despite Oppenheimer generally receiving a more positive reception than the competition, let’s not forget that Barbie did incredibly well too, receiving a ton of positive attention. On top of that, Greta Gerwig’s movie about the world’s most famous doll was commercially more successful than Nolan’s magnum opus, making $1.45 billion worldwide.

It's not a masterpiece, but perhaps it's what the fans want.]]>
<![CDATA[

Red One might be one of, if not the most expensive holiday movie ever made, and at a glance, its previews look like nothing groundbreaking, but what if I told you the movie was resonating with fans just as much as Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece, Oppenheimer?

We aren’t the first ones to utter these two completely different movies in the same sentence, in fact, the first that we know of was Red One star Dwayne Johnson himself. Ahead of the new film’s release, Johnson shared a story about the time he went to see Oppenheimer, and how that got him inspired about the future of Red One.

“With Red One, our intention was to make a movie that you can enjoy on the biggest screen possible,” Johnson said during an interview with IMAX. “I was midway through shooting Red One and I had an opportunity to see Oppenheimer. I watched in the IMAX theater where Christopher Nolan watches and screens his movies. It was amazing, but I was thinking: ‘Holy shit. Red One on this screen and with this technology could be game over.”

For anyone who knows what Red One is you’re probably confused to hear a statement like that, and yeah we’d agree. However, the only thing that’s important is what audiences are thinking, and those who have lodged their reviews on Rotten Tomatoes have spoken, and it’s feeling a lot like Oppenheimer.

Right now Red One has an incredible audience review score of 90 percent on the review website with more than 1000 scores lodged. That mirrors closely the 91 percent that Oppenheimer has curated since its initial release.

What makes it even more intriguing is the fact that critics slammed the holiday movie resulting in an abysmal 33% Tomatometer score. Even the first reactions to the movie were lackluster. While they praised the chemistry between characters on screen, they didn’t offer much in the way of highlighting other strengths in the production. But again, all that matters is the fans, and they’re loving it.

A glance at the reviews lodged by audiences shows that they love the holiday spirit that the movie emits. Not just that, but the special effects, cast, and unique story are all being extremely well received, so that’s a job well done for Johnson and the team right?

Well, the movie still has to recoup that incredibly high budget at the box office, and it seems to be off to a promising start outperforming extremely low domestic estimates. The movie debuted with a $34 million domestic box office take and $84 million globally. This will help out greatly in making back that cash, and we expect now that there are positive reviews from fans that will also make a big difference in getting moviegoers out to see it.

If you’re wondering what the plot of Red One actually is then here’s what you need to know. Red One is a story where Santa has been kidnapped and it’s up to his assistant who Johnson plays to team up with a level four naughty lister, played by Chris Evans, to rescue the big man.

Red One is in theaters now.

The director's multiple Oscar wins have made many wonder what he will do next.]]>
<![CDATA[

After over two decades in the entertainment industry, Christopher Nolan got the honor he always deserved. At the 2024 Academy Awards, he finally won the accolade for Best Director.

The filmmaker has been nominated eight times in the past without any wins. A decided oversight, for those of us familiar with his work. His first nomination for Memento was a masterclass in non-linear storytelling, while Dunkirk was a harrowing exploration of the titular battle. However, there is no doubt that Oppenheimer is his magnum opus. Nolan was moved by this win during his acceptance speech, as reported by Variety.

“To the Academy — movies are just a little bit over 100 years old. We don’t know where this incredible journey is going from here. But to know that you think I’m a meaningful part of it means the world to me.”

Oppenheimer also takes a non-linear approach to the life and times of the man behind the atomic bomb. Played with clarity and vulnerability by Cillian Murphy, J. Robert Oppenheimer pursues the creation of the bomb for scientific purposes, but also grapples with guilt over his role in the destruction of a country. With Nolan and the rest of Oppenheimer’s cumulative wins, many may be wondering what the director has in store for his next venture.

Christopher Nolan’s next movie 3d4326

For every subsequent film that Nolan makes, he somehow continues to up the ante. Following his mindbending 2010 endeavor, Inception, he went to space in Interstellar and reversed time in Tenet. Oppenheimer blew time travel, dreams, and historic battles all out of the water. Whatever he has next is sure to be impressive.

Unfortunately as of this writing, we don’t know what the director has in the works. More than likely he will be taking a well-deserved break following the creation of the 3 hour epic. But while we don’t know any specifics about the filmmaker’s plans, Nolan has dropped some hints about intriguing prospects he could one day take on. In a conversation with the British Film Institute, The Prestige director noted a genre he has not taken part in before.

“I think horror films are very interesting because they depend on very cinematic devices. [They are] about visceral response to things. So, at some point, I’d love to make a horror film.”

Nolan concluded that he hadn’t found a story yet that would lend itself well to the horror genre, but all in good time. Oppenheimer has already been a significant door into that territory. There is nothing more horrifying than being the person who was responsible for decimating two cities with radiation. The award-winning film explores these ideas with its disturbing imagery following the dropping of the bombs. It wouldn’t be a stretch to see Nolan furthering that vision into a full-fledged horror film somewhere down the line.

Who needs the MCU? ]]>
<![CDATA[

For a long while there, it looked like Marvel and Robert Downey Jr. had a practically symbiotic relationship, one which was mutually beneficial… Until it suddenly wasn’t.

Downey’s universally adored performance as Iron Man helped steer the MCU to meteoric greatness for its first 11 years of existence, while Marvel helped restore Downey’s once-ruined reputation and reinstall him in Hollywood as one of the most lucrative actors around. And then Tony Stark died in Avengers: Endgame. Marvel’s never been the same since and that looked to be true of Downey’s career as well when he followed up years of box office success with 2020’s dire Doolittle.

Enter Oppenheimer, with Downey’s left-field, against-type casting as Lewis Strauss making him a shoe-in for the Best ing Actor Oscar since last summer. Sure enough, the 96th Academy Awards went and gave the golden gong to the man who once pretended to pee in his superhero suit in Iron Man 2. It’s a tremendous and well-deserved achievement, no doubt about it, but it may have just put the final nail in the coffin of Downey’s potential MCU comeback.

Downey’s Oscar acceptance speech makes clear an MCU return is unlikely to happen 374158

Although he may have swaggered onto the stage like Tony Stark attending one of his own Stark Expos, Downey’s Oscar acceptance speech offered yet another, and perhaps the ultimate, reminder that he’s days as the Armored Avenger really are over. “Here’s my little secret,” Downey said when thanking director Christopher Nolan and producer Emma Thomas for casting him in the first place. “I needed this job more than it needed me.”

This ission echoes similar comments Downey has made throughout this awards season in which the actor paints himself as someone who needed a serious leg-up in of earning the industry’s respect and credibility amongst his peers after so long making mainstream blockbusters. That’s not to say that Downey is dismissive of his work for Marvel, as he personally believes he gave some of his “best work” while playing Iron Man. The problem, for him, is that few, outside of diehard MCU fans, recognized that.

“I felt so exposed after being in the cocoon of Marvel where I think I did some of the best work I will ever do, but it went a little bit unnoticed because of the genre,” Downey said on an episode of Rob Lowe’s podcast, Literally!.

Now that he has unarguably broken out of his Marvel cocoon and been reborn as an Oscar-winning character actor (this was Downey’s third nomination but first win), it seems there’s little chance that he would decide to come back for that much hoped for multiversal cameo later down the line. It was widely reported last year that Marvel Studios was considering bringing back Downey, Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson to boost flagging interest in the franchise, a rumor that even Kevin Feige point-blank denying it couldn’t destroy. It just made sense, after all, for Downey to turn up in Avengers: Secret Wars for a fan-pleasing reprisal.

However, with RDJ clearly eager to distance himself from Marvel as much as he can — even if he remains proud of his performance across his 10 MCU movies — and with his Oscar win no doubt launching a hundred different job offers, there really seems no way that he’ll return as Iron Man for the remainder of the Multiverse Saga. Now there’s a stark truth for you.

Did Robert Downey Jr. snub Ke Huy Quan at the Oscars? How could anyone possibly be rude to Ke Huy Quan?]]>
<![CDATA[

Last night was a big night for Oppenheimer star Robert Downey Jr. who took home his first ever Academy award for Best ing Actor. Although he’s receiving a lot of criticism from fans who claim the actor snubbed Ke Huy Quan.

Downey was up against some stiff competition for the award; Robert De Niro, Sterling K. Brown, Mark Ruffalo, and Ryan Gosling were all in the running. Meanwhile, last year’s winner of the award, Ke Huy Quan, stood up on stage to present the award. When he made the announcement the Iron Man star took a moment to celebrate with his wife and wave to the crowd before making his way on stage and taking the trophy from Quan without even making eye with him.

He did, however, shake Tim Robbins hand and fist bump Sam Rockwell before making his acceptance speech; even during his speech, he made time to thank Sam and the “fellas.” Although that only served to make the fact that he ignored the guy giving out the award even more blatant. Watching the whole clip, it’s hard to see it as anything other than a snub.

Naturally, this has upset a large portion of the internet. Ke Huy Quan was the talk of the town last year after his Oscar win for Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. His comeback story was one of the most inspirational and wholesome things to ever happen, alongside Brendan Fraser, who also had an amazing comeback last year. On top of that, he just seems like such a nice guy and as such, people feel protective of him, so seeing Downey not even acknowledge him left a bad taste in many people’s mouths.

Fans aired their grievances out online with some calling the star ‘arrogant.’

Of course, in the excitement of the moment it’s possible to become overwhelmed, which might explain it. Although if the internet does give Downey the benefit of the doubt then that means we also owe Taylor Swift an apology. Last month the singer was heavily criticized for her apparent snub of music legend Celine Dion, the whole thing was very similar to what happened between Dowey and Quan last night. Others also pointed out that Emma Stone also seemingly snubbed last year’s best actress winner, Michelle Yeoh, when accepting her award. It seems not snubbing the people handing out the awards is harder than it looks.

https://twitter.com/ankylosarahs/status/1767080378869940481?s=20

Similar to the Taylor Swift situation, Downey took a picture with Quan backstage after his acceptance speech, so it seems likely that the snub (hopefully) wasn’t intentional. After all, how could anyone have a problem with Ke Huy Quan? The man is just too wholesome.

The Oscars might just be simple movie awards for some, but they are monumental achievements for others. Even with the decrease in public interest, they’re still among the most prestigious awards one could ever win.

From under-represented communities breaking ground with the Academy to movie legends cementing their place among the all-time greats, the 96th Academy Awards achieved all kinds of records, even if some opportunities were controversially missed. Cillian Murphy wins the Oscar for Best Actor 53v11

The Irish have been dominating the entertainment industry in the past few years. Paul Mescal, Andrew Scott, Barry Keoghan, Colin Farrell, Saoirse Ronan, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, Ruth Negga, Fiona Shaw, and, of course, Cillian Murphy — the world of movies and television owes a great debt of gratitude to the great nation of Ireland. And yet, never has an Irish-born person won an Oscar for Best Actor. Until now.

I know what you’re thinking — what about one of the greatest actors of all time and three-time Best Actor winner Daniel Day-Lewis? Well, DDL does indeed have British-Irish citizenship, but he was born in London. Murphy led the race after securing the SAG award in February, and sure enough his Best Actor win serves as a fitting climax to the Hollywood Irish renaissance of the 2020s.

Justine Triet wins the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay b1s29

Anatomy of a Fall Nation was holding out hope Justine Triet would win at least one Oscar on Sunday (I know this because I, too, am part of it). Despite her film taking Cannes and the world by storm this past year, Triet unfortunately wasn’t the favorite to win in either of the categories she was up for; Best Original Screenplay (she co-wrote Anatomy of a Fall with her partner Arthur Harari) and Best Director.

And yet, against all the odds, a miracle struck on Sunday and Triet came away with the Best Original Screenplay gong. This means she is the first French woman to win in that category. Due to Christopher Nolan beating her to Best Director, though, it’s still a fact that only three women have won the Oscar for Best Director in the past (Kathryn Bigelow, 2010; Chloé Zhao, 2021; Jane Campion, 2022).

The Best International Feature Film category was a funny one this year. Anatomy of a Fall, a French movie nominated in almost every big category, was not ’s submission for the bracket. Perfect Days is a Japanese film made by a German man, and Italy’s submission, Io Capitano, barely has a lick of Italian in its two-hour runtime.

Similarly, The Zone of Interest, spoken entirely in German and set in Poland, is a British film. As a result, the Oscar winner stands as the UK’s first-ever win in the Best International Film category. The space is reserved for movies spoken not in the English language. The UK’s previous nominees in the category were for films with Welsh dialogue.

Lily Gladstone winning the Oscar for Best Actress 2u3uh

Lily Gladstone has already made history by becoming the first Native American person to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress (three other, non-American, Indigenous women have been nominated before — Merle Oberon, Keisha Castle-Hughes, and Yalitza Aparicio). They also became the first Native American/Indigenous winner of the SAG Award in the same category, sending them well on their way to repeating the feat at the Oscars.

Gladstone’s arresting performance as Mollie Burkhart in Killers of the Flower Moon would’ve granted the actress her first career Oscar and made her the first Indigenous woman to win for an acting performance and the first Native American Oscar winner ever. Of course, this didn’t end up happening as Emma Stone took the gong for the second time for Poor Things. Likewise Osage Nation songwriter Scott George, and the author of Best Original Song contender “Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People),” would’ve made history if he won as the first Native American man to be nominated in this category. However, Billie Eilish topped the category for Barbie‘s “What Was I Made For">Photo by Frank Micelotta/Getty Images

Of course, when you talk about Marty, you have to talk about Thelma. Possibly the greatest director-editor duo of all time, Scorsese’s film very nearly gave Thelma Schoonmaker a chance at making history too. The editor almost finally broke out of the four-way tie she’s been in since she won the Oscar for Best Editing for The Departed in 2007, bringing her total to three trophies (she had previously won for The Aviator and Raging Bull). Michael Kahn, Daniel Mandell, and Ralph Dawson all have three Oscars for Best Editing as well.

As it was, Schoonmaker lost out to Jennifer Lame for Oppenheimer, as predicted. Nevertheless, the turn of events shouldn’t be too sore for Schoonmaker as she remains the single most nominated person in the category with nine nods over the years — all but one for collaborations with Scorsese.

Al Pacino is a hero for saving people's time!]]>
<![CDATA[

As predicted, Oppenheimer took home the lion’s share of Oscar wins on Sunday night. Although, whilst announcing the film’s win for Best Picture, legendary actor Al Pacino made a minor slip up that broke Oscar’s tradition.

Oppenheimer won seven of the 13 Oscars it was nominated for, Aside from Best Picture, the film scored awards for lead actor Cillian Murphy as well as an award for Robert Downey Jr. for best ing actor. The award for Best Picture was announced at the end of the ceremony as usual, this year The Godfather actor, Al Pacino was there to announce the winner.

What did Al Pacino do? 3j6l3a

Typically the Best Picture award would be given a little bit of a dramatic build up, there would be some tension, all the nominees for the category would be announced first and then after a bit more waiting, the winner would be announced. Although Pacino was having none of that this year as he skipped straight to announcing Christopher Nolan’s biopic as the winner. You can see the clip for yourself here.

To be fair, he built it up a little bit, teasing the audience as he opened the envelope, but it all fell apart when, as soon as he opened the envelope he announced, ‘my eyes see Oppenheimer.’ The whole thing happens pretty fast, and it’s almost underwhelming, you can hear the people in the crowd actually processing the fact that they just heard the winner as the clapping and cheering take a moment to start in full. They were all probably recovering from whiplash thanks to Pacino’s speedy announcement.

Why exactly did he do that? It’s not clear, it seems like in the excitement of the moment he may have just forgotten the usual procedure; or maybe he just didn’t feel like playing the Academy’s game this year. He’s 83 after all, perhaps he just wanted an early night, which he certainly got as his slip-up meant that the awards ceremony didn’t run late for the first time in years, in fact, they were able to wrap it all up a few minutes early.

Mistakes like this seem par for the course at the Oscars 5v2m6n

If you know anything about the history of the Academy Awards then you’ll know that this is nothing compared to past dramas at the ceremony. The infamous Will Smith slap took the world by storm a couple of years ago. Although this incident reminded many of the 2017 Best Picture drama in which Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty announced the wrong winner, claiming La La Land won the award over Moonlight, assuming it was a misprint. Of course, Pacino’s mistake doesn’t come anywhere near the level of sheer second-hand embarrassment many felt watching the 2017 Oscars, but it was still a funny little moment that got people talking.

After prematurely announcing the wrong Robert by way of a lazy-tongued Tim Robbins, the Academy fulfilled one of its many prophecies and bestowed the one and only Robert Downey Jr. with his first Oscar earlier this evening.

Indeed, the crown jewel of the Marvel Cinematic Universe walked off stage with a statuette in his hands for the first time thanks to his tour-de-force turn in Oppenheimer, where he played the vindicative Lewis Strauss with some of the most gumptious venom to grace the silver screen last year.

So, where exactly does this win land in Downey Jr.’s accolade résumé?

How many Academy Awards has Robert Downey Jr. won? 351f3o

Downey Jr.’s win in Oppenheimer marks the first Academy Award win for the actor in his career, who has previously been nominated twice before; once for his portrayal of Kirk Lazarus in Tropic Thunder (which, like Oppenheimer, earned him a Best ing Actor nod) and for his role as the titular silent film icon in Chaplin (for which he was nominated for Best Actor).

The shoes of Lewis Strauss have also earned him a Golden Globe and a BAFTA, and, as implied above, has put the actor in the illustrious category of performers with three or more Oscar nominations; an honor he shares with fellow nominee and Barbenheimer rival Ryan Gosling.

Downey Jr. was nominated alongside the likes of Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction), Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flowers Moon), and Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things). It was one of seven awards won by Oppenheimer that night, alongside wins for Editing, Cinematography, Original Score, Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Director (Christopher Nolan), and Best Picture.

<![CDATA[

The Oscars are here yet again, the biggest film industry awards ceremony of the year, and it will be airing on TV in just a few days. But will the Academy Awards be available to watch via Hulu?

We’ve had a truly great year for entertainment, cinema is well and truly back with last year giving us Oppenheimer, Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon and so much more. We’ve already seen big wins for the many talented people who work on these films at award ceremonies earlier this year such as the Golden Globes, the SAG awards and the Baftas. But now we’re closing out the awards season with a bang (or a slap) and this year’s Oscars certainly won’t be one to miss.

Will the Oscars be available to watch on Hulu? 3y3t43

The Academy Awards will be available to watch live via Hulu but not on the basic package. The official page for the Oscars says that you can watch the ceremony with a Hulu live TV plan. These plans start from $76.99 a month although they may offer a free trial. It gives subscribers access to Hulu and Disney plus content as well as live TV and ESPN plus.

If you don’t have Hulu live TV then you should definitely check the Oscars website to see where else you may be able to catch the show on Sunday. There are plenty of other streaming services and places online that you may be able to view the awards from.

Forget Christmas, Oscar season is the most wonderful time of the year.]]>
<![CDATA[

The 96th Academy Awards have one of the best line-ups in years.

Most categories are so stacked that you could easily replace the worthy nominees for a handful of other candidates and it would still be a fair assessment of last year’s exquisite quality level. Take Best Director, for example. Made up of an impossibly talented selection of filmmakers including Justine Triet (Anatomy of a Fall), Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon), Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things), and Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest), yet missing almost the same amount of deserving contenders, the likes of Celine Song, Greta Gerwig, Alexander Payne, or Todd Haynes.

Oppenheimer, as expected, is the ceremony’s most nominated film with 13 nods, followed by Poor Things with 11, Killers of the Flower Moon with 10, Barbie with eight, Maestro with seven, and The Holdovers, American Fiction, The Zone of Interest and Anatomy of a Fall all with five.

The months leading up to the March ceremony. Industry prizes like the Directors, Actors, and Producers’ Guild Awards are significant in predicting Oscar nominations due to the overlap in their voting bodies. Those will take place on Feb 10., Feb. 24, and Feb. 25, respectively.

With less intersection but more cultural relevance, the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs, the Spirit Awards, and the Critics Choice Awards have all become Oscar indicators in their own ways. Critics Awards like the NYFCC, LAFCA, and NSFC Awards always create momentum as well.

Oppenheimer (Universal Pictures) 5r6c5m

Christopher Nolan’s biographical epic Oppenheimer is well on its way to being the big winner at this year’s Oscars. The Academy loves a biopic and has gone on to award movies in this genre that were much less deserving. Not only has Oppenheimer been celebrated by critics, but it has also broken box-office records and experienced extraordinary demand for its physical copies — something which feels historic in its own right during this streaming era.

The Oscars Oppenheimer is most likely to win based on the buzz and other accolades it’s received so far are Best Picture, Best Actor, Best ing Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Sound. The competition for Directing and Adapted Screenplay is too fierce to predict for now and considering their winners don’t always line up with the ceremony’s chief prize, these two might result in upsets for the Universal Pictures juggernaut.

Poor Things (Searchlight Pictures) 13525h

The wacky Frankensteinian narrative Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite, Dogtooth) created for Poor Things from a screenplay by Tony McNamara leaves no one indifferent, for better or for worse. Still, the film’s reception at the festival circuit has been overwhelmingly positive, which combined with Lanthimos and his cast’s track record should make this black comedy a 2024 Academy Awards heavyweight.

While it would take a big plot twist for Poor Things to go home with either the Best Picture or the Best Director statuettes, the Searchlight Pictures film is among the favorites to win in the Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay categories. Emma Stone is Lily Gladstone’s biggest competitor, especially since the latter was shockingly shunned from the BAFTAs. Fortune could also come for Lanthimos’ feature in Costume Design, Production Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Cinematography.

Killers of the Flower Moon (Apple Original Films/Paramount Pictures) 2j392t

The master filmmaker Martin Scorsese delivered what was arguably the year’s most striking film with Killers of The Flower Moon, landing nominations in all major categories. The crime drama is a ruthless yet stunningly sensitive dissection of the murders of Osage Nation citizens by predatory white businessmen looking to steal their oil rights in the 1920s.

Robert De Niro might just give Robert Downey Jr. and Ryan Gosling a run for their money in the Best ing Actor category, while the love and respect for Scorsese’s career could give him the edge over Nolan among voters. Lily Gladstone would make for a revolutionary Best Actress winner, but the competition might just prove too fierce. The film won big at the NYFCC Awards and the National Board of Review awards, securing the top prize of Best Film and wins for Scorsese, Gladstone, and Director of Photography Rodrigo Prieto.

Barbie (Warner Bros.) 2h6h

Barbie was the biggest movie of 2023. Last year’s winning streak for Everything Everywhere All At Once attests to Academy voters’ openness to unconventional contenders which could bode well for Greta Gerwig’s fierce fantastical take on the most famous doll in the world, but the lack of love for her and Robbie in the Directing and Acting categories could prove ominous.

At this point, Ryan Gosling’s culture-shifting ing performance as Ken and the two iconic original songs by Mark Ronson (“I’m Just Ken”) and the Oscar-magnet siblings that are Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell (“What Was I Made For">American Fiction‘s five nods were a pleasant surprise among the list of nominees. The hard-hitting satire about Black stereotypes in media and the publishing industry at large, directed and written by Cord Jefferson, received love in the Best Picture, Best Actor, Best ing Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Score categories.

Despite receiving nominations in a large number of other awards ceremonies on its way to the Oscars, we predict American Fiction will go home empty-handed, although it might just beat out the fierce competition in Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Oscars air on Sunday, Mar. 10, on ABC.

Don't worry, there's still some time to catch up on all the contenders.]]>
<![CDATA[

What a year it has been for him. Awards season is now in full swing en route to cinema’s biggest night, the 96th Academy Awards. We’ve now got our hands on all the nominees, and despite a couple of letdowns, the race is mighty strong.

The biggest surprise among the list of nods for Best Adapted Screenplay was the absence of Killers of the Flower Moon, the Martin Scorsese Western crime drama epic, written by the veteran filmmaker and Oscar winner screenwriter Eric Roth.

American Fiction h3x5x

Cord Jefferson scored big in his feature debut, which he both directed and wrote, landing five Academy Awards for American Fiction, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. The biting and often hilarious examination of Black stereotypes in media is based on the 2001 novel Erasure by Percival Everett and follows Best Actor nominee Jeffrey Wright as a frustrated novelist who accidentally becomes famous from a book he wrote as a satire of everything he despises.

American Fiction is only showing in theaters. No VOD or streaming date has been put forth by distributors Amazon or MGM Studios for now.

Barbie 6v703t

The nominations for the year’s biggest film were all over the place at the 2024 Oscars. Unfortunately, Greta Gerwig couldn’t secure a nomination for her directing, but at least she and her other half Noah Baumbach were recognized for their screenplay. The fantasy comedy film about America’s most famous doll wasn’t affected by the last-minute switch from Original to Adapted Screenplay, based on the Academy’s differing rules from those of the Writers Guild of America.

Everyone and their mothers have probably watched Barbie at this point, but just in case you’re still catching up, it’s available to stream on Max. You can also buy or rent it on Apple TV, Amazon Video, Google Play Movies, YouTube, and all other usual spots.

Oppenheimer d1l3u

The latter half of Barbenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s epic biopic about the Father of the Atomic Bomb is one of the favorites to score big at this year’s Academy Awards. Leading the nominations with a whopping 13 nods, the Universal Pictures feature couldn’t miss out on Best Adapted Screenplay.

Christopher Nolan himself gets full credit for the script, which was unorthodoxly written in the first person and with lead actor Cillian Murphy in mind from the get-go. It’s based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin and traces Oppenheimer’s life from a college student to the director of the Manhattan Project and his persecution by the U.S. government later in life.

Poor Things 1y5gq

If I had a nickel for every time a collaboration between screenwriter Tony McNamara, director Yorgos Lanthimos, and star Emma Stone took the Oscars by storm I’d have exactly two nickels. It’s not much, but it’s really exciting that it’s happened twice. Poor Things is the trio’s second time all working together following the 2018 masterpiece that is The Favourite and it has resulted in 11 Academy Award nominations (three more than its predecessor). McNamara wrote the screenplay from the eponymous 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray.

In this Frankensteinian steampunk outrageous comedy, Stone plays Bella, a young woman who’s been resurrected with a new infant brain and must rediscover the entire world. It’s provocative and eccentric, and worth your time. The only way to watch it for now is in theaters. The film has no streaming or VOD release dates as yet.

The Zone of Interest cv6x

Rounding up the list of Best Adapted Screenplay nominees is Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, which he both directed and wrote. The American-British-Polish co-production takes from the 2014 novel by Martin Amis of the same title about a Nazi family building an idyllic home next door to the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Described as a ruthless examination of humankind’s complacency in the face of terror, this historical drama is only available to watch in theaters and has not been granted a digital release date.

The Oscars air on Sunday, Mar. 10, on ABC.

Want to see the best films of the year? Here's where you check them out.]]>
<![CDATA[

The 2024 Oscar nominations have finally arrived. As many predicted, the 96th Annual Academy Awards will see the final bout of “Barbenheimer”, with Barbie and Oppenheimer ringing in their final round with a swathe of battles across multiple categories.

But the much-coveted Best Picture category is anyone’s game this year. All ten films are worth watching, though some of them are considerably easier to track down at home than others. So, if you want to see what all the fuss is about, here’s how to watch all 10 nominees.

American Fiction h3x5x

American Fiction hit domestic theaters a month ago on Dec. 15, 2023 and is currently seeing a staggered release across international markets. Sadly this means that right now it’s both unavailable to stream and relatively difficult to find in theaters. That said, American Fiction is an MGM release and as Amazon bought the company, we suspect it’ll arrive on Amazon Prime Video sooner rather than later, and certainly before the March ceremony.

Anatomy of a Fall 452ye

Anatomy of a Fall had a limited theatrical release in Oct. 2023 and is now available to purchase online from the usual places. You can purchase or rent a digital copy of the movie from Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, the Microsoft Store and Vudu.

If you can wait, it’ll likely become available on Amazon Prime Video as part of its subscription package fairly soon as it’s a Lionsgate release.

Barbie 6v703t

After cleaning up at the box office Barbie has made a similarly successful leap to home viewing. Greta Gerwig’s monster hit is available to rent or purchase from all the usual places, though is also included in the MAX streaming library for all subscribers.

The Holdovers 2l3h1q

After performing above expectations at the Golden Gloves, The Holdovers is fast becoming an Oscar contender. You can purchase it at the usual places, but the movie is available to stream as part of the Peacock streaming library.

Killers of the Flower Moon 67563k

Martin Scorsese’s violent epic may finally nab him the Best Director gong that’s eluded him for decades. You can purchase this movie at Amazon Prime Video and so on, but it’s available to stream as part of Apple TV Plus in its subscription package.

Maestro 2p5j4w

Let’s keep this short and sweet. After a limited theatrical release, Maestro became available for no extra cost to all Netflix subscribers on Dec. 20. Check it out there.

Oppenheimer d1l3u

Christopher Nolan has been a big proponent of physical media, so pushed Oppenheimer‘s DVD and Blu-ray release back in Nov. 2023. However, the movie is now available to digitally rent or purchase, and will be available to stream domestically as part of the Peacock streaming library from Feb. 16. 2024.

Past Lives 2r563b

A24’s critically acclaimed indie drama very much deserves its nomination, and can be rented or bought at the typical places. If can wait just a little longer and have a Paramount Plus subscription you’re in luck though, as it’s going to be added to the “Showtime tier” for streaming on Feb. 2, 2024.

Poor Things 1y5gq

Possibly the most bonkers movie of the line-up, Yorgos Lanthimos’ wild ride is still in theaters and is currently unavailable to rent, purchase or stream. We suspect that will change soon and it’ll debut on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV Plus for purchase in the next few weeks. There’s no date for its addition to any streaming library, but as a Searchlight Pictures movie we’d expect it to debut on Hulu.

The Zone of Interest cv6x

Jonathan Glazer’s sobering and fascinating Holocaust drama isn’t going to be for everyone, but is a monumental feat of filmmaking. The Zone of Interest is still in theaters and cannot be streamed on any platform. However, we’d expect it to arrive as part of the MAX streaming library before the ceremony.
