These rumors need to settle down, but let's talk about the mutant in question.]]>
<![CDATA[

Right out of the gate, let it be known that the rumor you’re about to see is complete and utter cow patty, and if not for the opportunity to talk about the character’s will-be MCU nuances and how the franchise is beyond repair if it ever actually went ahead with this casting, it would not be worth calling attention to in any way, shape, form, or fashion. 3m5q54

Anyway, the rumor is that Billie Eilish is in the running to play Rogue in the MCU, and that the fan-favorite mutant will appear in Captain Marvel 3, which will also kick off the Mutants Saga of the MCU.

This isn’t a knock on Eilish’s acting, which may or may not be any good. She has one acting credit wherein she plays someone other than herself, and that’s in the Janine Nabers/Donald Glover-created horror-comedy miniseries Swarm, where she plays cult leader Eva. She only appears in the fourth episode, and I have not watched it.

But let’s face it: Marvel wouldn’t cast Billie Eilish as Rogue for her acting prowess. They’d cast her because her name is a marketing goldmine that would help invite the franchise’s increasingly casual fanbase to an almost cartoonish degree (cartoonish, that is, not in the amount of people it would draw, but in the methods that Marvel would be using to get people to consume their product). It would be no different than roping Robert Downey Jr. back into the fray as Doctor Doom, and would at once declare a commitment to market-driven storytelling, which is a phrase that should never exist.

Now that’s out of the way, we can talk about Rogue more directly 6y449

Casting an especially young Rogue is neither here nor there; you could make that work just as well as a more mature Rogue. There would be obvious wisdom, however, in introducing the character in Captain Marvel 3, as that would allow Rogue to absorb Carol Danvers’ powers; a key, recognizable plot point in plenty of X-Men media that the MCU could play with in a number of ways.

Maybe, for instance, Rogue absorbs them permanently and shifts the canon’s power creep — which would be a great occasion to mark the start of the Mutant Saga — or maybe the film’s tension would be built around whether Rogue gets away with it or not. This would all be additionally beholden to Rogue’s inevitable villain-to-hero arc. Would she start and end Captain Marvel 3 as an antagonist, or would she begin to grow into a hero as early as that the end of that film?

The one piece of legit mileage an Eilish casting would have is that Eilish is a queer woman, and given how queer comic readers have responded to Rogue over the years (her inability to touch others has long resonated with those suffering from legislative queer oppression and more social homophobia), there would be wisdom in writing a queer interpretation of Rogue (and Agatha All Along suggests that Marvel might even allow a queer character whose queerness is actually well-written). But even if a queer interpretation is what Marvel is going for — I would bet money that they aren’t — Billie Eilish makes no sense as a first choice outside of drawing more casual audiences.

Moreover, the dream casting of a lifetime exists in the spunky, sassy shape of one Keke Palmer, who has also spoken about her queer-adjacent outlook on life in the past. And considering Chris Claremont himself originally intended for Rogue to be modeled after Grammy-nominated R&B artist Grace Jones, the significance and depth of opportunity that a Palmer casting would bring is simply too nutritious for Marvel to up, even though they probably will.

She's got to go higher, further, faster in the MCU. ]]>
<![CDATA[

Nia DaCosta has unjustly been placed at the receiving end of a lot of slack following the ill-fated release of The Marvels and its consequentially poor box-office performance. However, there are corners of the Internet still that recognize the director’s merits in the highly entertaining Marvel blockbuster.

In The Marvels, DaCosta paired elements of a buddy adventure story with lighthearted family comedy and high-octane action sequences, in the process delivering some of the best character dynamics and personality-driven directing in MCU’s recent history.

To let go of such a budding talent would be a huge mistake on Marvel’s part. A number of factors contributed to the film’s disappointing ticket figures, namely the Hollywood strikes, a messy marketing campaign, and the disparaging hate train against anything Brie Larson touches, but Nia DaCosta’s work cannot and should not be counted among them. If she’s willing, the MCU would be lucky to have the promising filmmaker behind Candyman and Little Woods back in the director’s chair for any of the projects that follow.

Those of us who love Carol Danvers can appreciate the amount of heart Nia DaCosta put into her portrayal of the isolated and regretful Cosmic Avenger. Despite having to split Carol’s time between her two fellow leading ladies, The Marvels still managed to infuse the character with significant character development and charisma.

Brie Larson really shone under DaCosta’s keen conduction, making the duo not just a want but a need in the future of the super-powered franchise. As much as we loved the trio at the center of The Marvels, it would be interesting to take a proper deep dive into the Captain Marvel of today and how she has changed since we met her back in the 90s.

Let’s not forget that as well as being a three-movie deep filmmaker, Nia DaCosta is also a talented TV director — just see her work on acclaimed British crime thriller series Top Boy. It might be in Marvel’s best interests, then, to hire her to fix one of the unfortunately several Disney Plus productions that are in need of a tune-up. Ironheart springs to mind as one that could be perfect for DaCosta, given the wonderful job she did with fellow teen heroine Kamala Khan in The Marvels. Riri Williams deserves her chance to shine in her own solo show, and DaCosta could be just the person to helm those significant reshoots due to take place.

On a similar page right now is Wonder Man, a series that Marvel Studios is apparently so keen to make us forget is even a thing that it’s hardly been mentioned amid all the talk of its reshuffled Disney Plus schedule. Although the Yahya Abdul-Mateen II series — starring him as actor-turned-superhero Simon Williams — had started shooting prior to the strikes taking effect, it’s now apparently been shelved as Marvel rethinks its creative direction. Enter Nia DaCosta. We know she’s great at nailing the blend of comedy and action this series requires and she’s already collaborated with Yahya on her Candyman remake.

Why include the best cameo ever in The Marvels by having Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie give Brie Larson’s Carol an emotionally charged pep talk if not as a hint to a future Thor film helmed by Nia DaCosta? We’re not saying Valkyrie needs to be the deuteragonist of Thor 5, as she deals with the pressures of being King of Asgard, and that only Nia DaCosta can be trusted with a job that important, but that’s also actually exactly what we’re saying.

Those two minutes of screentime in The Marvels did more for the character than all of Thor: Love and Thunder and we’re tired of Marvel sidetracking its best characters. It’s Valkyrie time, and Nia DaCosta is the one for the job.

There are true undeniable truths in this world. The first is that the forthcoming Young Avengers movie or television show needs to be, come hell or high water, the best thing the MCU has produced since Avengers: Infinity War. And the second is that Nia DaCosta, given the chance and in the right circumstances, could do fantastic things with this massively beloved property.

It makes sense that she’s the one who gets to water the seeds she planted in The Marvels and watch them grow into what may very well be the most anticipated project in the future of the franchise.

Well, I mean, this goes without saying, right?

Sam Raimi might’ve resurrected Patrick Stewart’s Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but Nia DaCosta is the first Marvel director to take us back into the X-Mansion itself, so naturally she definitely deserves first dibs on helming the X-Men reboot if she wants. And you can bet she would, given that DaCosta is an enormous Marvel nerd who had way more ideas to tie The Marvels into the wider MCU than came to .

With the entirety of Fox’s X-Men franchise directed by white guys, it’s about time Marvel switched it up for its own take on mutantkind and it just so happens that DaCosta is the most qualified person for the job.

Spider-Man may have just returned to the MCU, but Marvel is already trying to pencil the web-head in for a few of their features. As of right now, the agreement between the aforementioned studio and Sony only allows Peter Parker to pop up in two more MCU movies. Kevin Feige is hoping that they can strike a new deal before the current one concludes though, which will allow the superhero to have even more of a presence in the popular cinematic universe. Specifically, Marvel wants Spider-Man to cameo in either Captain Marvel 2 or Captain Marvel 3. That’s according to sources close to WGTC – the same ones who told us Black Knight was coming to the MCU back in April. From what we understand, this all depends on whether or not the two sides can work out a new deal and if Sony is comfortable with the character appearing in one of the aforementioned films. There’s no reason to believe that this won’t happen, either, as both studios seem to have buried the hatchet and so long as the MCU and Sony’s Marvel universe continue to strike gold at the box office with Tom Holland appearing in both franchises, it seems likely that the two can have an amicable partnership. Then again, greed could once again get in the way of any future dealings and derail the negotiations, so nothing is set in stone just yet.

It’s possible that Feige wants Spider-Man to appear in one of the Captain Marvel installments due to concern over the film’s potential bottom line. Despite a huge debut for Carol Danvers, the character has since been labeled as one of the more unpopular superheroes in the MCU. A lot of this has to do with backlash over Brie Larson, who’s been the subject of various online petitions to boot her from the role. Her many critics have attacked practically every scene she’s in, while others have even gone so far as to remove her completely from Avengers: Endgame. Things have gotten so bad, in fact, that Disney is rumored to have lost confidence in the Academy Award-winning actress and even removed her from their marketing campaign for the company’s streaming service. Holland, on the other hand, is considered to be the best Spider-Man actor of all-time. As such, maybe Feige’s hoping that his likability can help audiences get back on board with Larson, especially since she’s contractually obligated to appear in at least five more MCU movies. Regardless, it’ll be interesting to see if Sony allows this to happen. Captain Marvel 2 is rumored to be arriving some time in 2023, while the next Spider-Man installment will be hitting theaters in July of 2021. As always, watch this space for more.]]>
