We’re at a point now where we perhaps shouldn’t be surprised by any headline (ahem, Signal, ahem), but news of A Minecraft Movie’s box office success has thrown this writer for a loop.

The recently released adaptation of the video game has become a surprise hit in the days since it landed in cinemas, to the point where it has now dethroned Barbie (yes, that Barbie) in of a key milestone. With news of its domestic box office haul, A Minecraft Movie has now officially beaten Barbie to score Warner Bros.’ third biggest domestic debut of all time. That’s based on A Minecraft Movie bringing $163 million (!) in its domestic opening weekend, which itself was $6 million more than original projections.

That haul means the Jack Black-starring adaptation now sits behind only Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II as the studio’s biggest domestic debut earners, but the recent Minecraft figures also saw it break a few more records, too. According to Comscore, Minecraft has now spawned the biggest domestic opening weekend for a film based on a video game, beating out the already lucrative success of fellow adaptation, The Super Mario Bros. Movie

The box office haul for A Minecraft Movie is especially surprising given that, by all s, the movie… isn’t that great. Even before it was released, fans were critical of the film’s animation style, and its eventual premiere didn’t exactly prove any of the naysayers wrong. On top of that, there were rumors of on-set tensions while filming on the part of castmate Jason Mamoa, and early criticisms of Black’s divisive line delivery in one of the (universally loathed) trailers. What all of it amounted to was a movie that was seemingly doomed from the outset, culminating in a lackuster 48% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite the negative reception, A Minecraft Movie’s box office success might’ve been predictable, at least if the recent trend inspired by the movie is to be believed. Dubbed the ‘Chicken Joey’ trend, the TikTok craze has seen scores of moviegoers loudly interrupt a specific scene in A Minecraft Movie involving a blocky chicken, and proceeding to throw popcorn at the screen or break out in rowdy applause. So fervent was the craze that, in at least one instance, police were called to a cinema to kick out participants in the ‘Chicken Joey’ trend.

With that context, perhaps we should have foreseen that A Minecraft Movie had a more imioned fanbase than we originally imagined, even to the point of usurping the Barbie-pink craze that swept cinemas back in 2023. Of course, it’s possible that a good chunk of moviegoers bought Minecraft tickets simply to see Jennifer Coolidge on screen (me), but who knew her star power could overtake that of Margot Robbie">CNN about A Minecraft Movie’s surprise runaway success, box office analyst David A. Gross said that the momentum behind the film, including in the form of the TikTok craze, might go some way in explaining how even a loathed film can rake in so much cash. “When a release catches fire like this, it generates its own momentum and you can set aside all projections,” Ross said. Regardless of where you land in of your thoughts on the film, Minecraft’s box office haul makes one thing clear: in 2025, even the most outlandish news headlines will oftentimes be true.

Netflix queen Millie Bobby Brown is swiftly dethroned as a ‘Bridgerton’ breakout says ‘bye, Barbie’ on streaming https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/movies/netflix-queen-millie-bobby-brown-is-swiftly-dethroned-as-a-bridgerton-breakout-says-bye-barbie-on-streaming/ https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/movies/netflix-queen-millie-bobby-brown-is-swiftly-dethroned-as-a-bridgerton-breakout-says-bye-barbie-on-streaming/#respond Thu, 20 Mar 2025 21:01:13 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/?p=1844110 Let's just say critics weren't feeling this particular Marvel reunion.]]>

Sorry, Morbius ⏤ your chances of ascending to the top of the streaming charts were always slim, but now they’re just downright impossible. That’s because a certain Netflix queen by the name of Millie Bobby Brown is back at the top of the charts ⏤ or is she?

Brown’s latest project, a neat little flick called The Electric State, is currently sitting comfortably at the top of the Netflix charts, per FlixPatrol. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo of Avengers: Endgame fame, the sci-fi adventure follows a teenager and her robot as they traverse a war-torn humans-vs.-drones landscape in search of the girl’s missing brother. It’s a true Marvel reunion for the Russos, who reunited with Marvel mainstay Chris Pratt as well as Loki’s Ke Huy Quan, Captain America’s Stanley Tucci, and both Anthony Mackie and Giancarlo Esposito from 2025’s Captain America: Brave New World. And yet, despite all this star power, The Electric State boasts a painful 15% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing. The Atlantic literally called it “instantly forgettable.” Ouch, Mills.

Now look, being #1 on Netflix is nothing to be ashamed of ⏤ if it were indeed true. No offense to FlixPatrol, but per this author’s own Netflix , The Electric State is no longer in the #1 spot, at least not in the United States. In fact, it’s been dethroned by a film that WGTC’s own Christian Bone described as being “offensively fangless” and guilty of treating its audience like “dumb animals.” (Double ouch, Mills.)

Which movies have already dethroned Millie Bobby Brown’s The Electric State?

You read that correctly. The Electric State has already slid out of Netflix’s first-place slot thanks to not one, but two other films ⏤ and one of them is particularly embarrassing. The movie currently in the #2 spot ahead of Electric? Sony’s swelteringly horrific Kraven the Hunter, starring Marvel alum Aaron Taylor-Johnson as a buff beast-man determined to live his life as violently as possible.

Curiously, Kraven boasts the same RT critics score as Electric ⏤ a grim 15% ⏤ but even more shocking is the fact that it has received an even higher audience score: 73% to Electric’s 72. The film currently beating both on the Netflix charts is The Twister: Caught in the Storm. This means that yes, a documentary about tornadoes is creaming Queen Millie’s outing with warring robots and Chris Pratt’s ‘stache. At least we can all breathe a sigh of relief that Morbius is nowhere to be found.

Meanwhile, a Bridgerton star ascends to true streaming royalty

While Millie Bobby Brown comes to with what must be an immense shock following her astronomical Stranger Things success, a Bridgerton star is likely squealing with glee over on Prime. Per Flix, Simone Ashley’s Picture This has quickly risen to the #1 spot following its March 6 release. One look at the trailer will tell you why. Not only does this film star Young Voldemort, but it’s the laugh-out-loud film we all need in a year that so far has been as humorous as New York’s rat infestation. (We’re still waiting on that musical, Gaga.)

Picture This has only been out for two weeks, and yet it’s already saying “buh-bye” to arguably the cinematic event of our lifetime: Barbie. Yep, Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster smash is currently sitting in Prime Video’s #4 spot above such competition as The Super Mario Bros. Movie and that one where Chris Evans engages in fisticuffs with snowmen. Before outranking Netflix queens and Captain America, Ashley appeared in Bridgerton season 2 as Anthony Bridgerton’s love interest, Kate Sharma. Since then, she has appeared in Disney’s The Little Mermaid and an animated movie about cats called 10 Lives ⏤ “because nine just ain’t enough!” (Oi…)

Picture This is currently available to stream on Prime Video, and if you’re in the mood to watch Millie be spectacular even if her film isn’t, you can catch The Electric State only on Netflix. Or, if you really feel like feeling your feels, you can watch this year’s Baby Reindeer, currently in Netflix’s #1 spot for TV shows and unlikely to budge anytime soon.

Wait, so we’re really getting a live-action ‘MONOPOLY’ movie? https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/news/wait-so-were-really-getting-a-live-action-monopoly-movie/ https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/news/wait-so-were-really-getting-a-live-action-monopoly-movie/#respond Thu, 06 Mar 2025 18:41:11 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/?p=1840590 What’s next? A “Scrabble” film?]]>

We’ve been in the era of live-action adaptations, but things are starting to get a bit ridiculous. When rumors about a Monopoly movie first rose, no one thought it would ever happen. Fine, there was Dungeons & Dragons and Barbie, but on the surface, those had some appeal. Nonetheless, it looks like the powers that be are in fact committed to bringing Mr. Monopoly, aka Milburn Pennybags, to life.

Looks like development just ed “GO”

Per Deadline, Monopoly is in full force! After an extensive search, the movie has finally landed some writers. The duo of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein will create its screenplay. The pair is best known for co-writing Spiderman: Homecoming and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. So at least the writing is in good hands.

Funnily, this movie is not a new concept at all. Rumors of a live-action Monopoly first began to spread way back in 2008. However, it has been in production hell for over a decade. Ridley Scott was initially attached to the proposed project, but eventually backed out. Next, Andrew Niccol was brought on as a screenwriter in 2015, but production soon tapered off. In 2019, Kevin Hart was announced as a producer, and the first cast member of the movie. Tim Story was to direct.

However, once again, the plans died off, and Monopoly remained in development hell until 2023. Lionsgate extended its development rights to the classic board game by purchasing eOne Films, and once the extension was complete, Lionsgate set the ball rolling for the adaptation. The movie will be produced by Margot Robbie’s award-winning production company LuckyChap, as well as Hasbro Entertainment.

What will the Monopoly movie be about?

Monopoly is the most popular board game in the world, but does that mean we need to see it on the big screen? Reactions to the news of the Monopoly movie have gone both ways. On one end, there’s the curiosity of what the movie would be about. On the other end, it’s a wonder why on earth this is even an idea. The writing duo of Daley and Goldstein have the experience, but not everyone’s convinced. Unlike D&D, Monopoly doesn’t have any lore or stories– players don’t even have characters.

Interestingly, Margot Robbie’s attachment to the movie might mean they’re going down the Barbie route. The box-office success took the outside-the-box approach of making a movie about Barbie, the brand, and used the movie to provide commentary on Barbie’s place in culture.

Similarly, Monopoly can also take inspiration from another unlikely film adaptation — The Lego Movie. Based on the construction toy line, The Lego Movie had people equally as confused when it was announced. But, instead of making a movie wholly about Legos, or trying to establish Lego lore, original characters were created. Monopoly already has an established setting, with the properties in the American version of the game featuring locations from Atlantic City, New Jersey. This could serve as a starting point to tell a story. Furthermore, Monopoly‘s economic theme can inform the plot. Besides all this, what we want to know is who’s going to play Mr. Monopoly.

‘That was very gratifying to hear’: King Charles has finally broken his silence and told us if he prefers ‘Barbie’ to ‘Oppenheimer https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/movies/that-was-very-gratifying-to-hear-king-charles-has-finally-broken-his-silence-and-told-us-if-he-prefers-barbie-to-oppenheimer/ https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/movies/that-was-very-gratifying-to-hear-king-charles-has-finally-broken-his-silence-and-told-us-if-he-prefers-barbie-to-oppenheimer/#respond Thu, 19 Dec 2024 15:46:14 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/?p=1813487 Quick, someone ask him about ‘Wicked’ vs. ‘Gladiator 2!’]]>

You wouldn’t think of King Charles as the kind of guy to be a movie buff, and yet it seems the U.K. monarch still manages to find time during his busy schedule to sit down and watch some spectacular kino. Perhaps it’s his way of escaping all the royal drama that’s constantly going on.

Director Christopher Nolan and his wife, film producer, Emma Thomas, both recently received a knighthood and a damehood from the king for their contributions to film, ing other honorees like Sam Mendes (American Beauty, 1917), Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave, Blitz), and Stephen Frears (The Queen, Victoria & Abdul).

Not only did the pair get the chance to meet and have a conversation with Charles, but he also confirmed that he had indeed seen Nolan’s latest film, Oppenheimer, and that he very much enjoyed it. Speaking on the matter, Thomas said, “He’d seen Oppenheimer, and he liked it, so that was very gratifying to hear.” Clearly, Charles is a fan of Nolan and Thomas’ work – sorry to disappoint the Barbie fans out there.

Like most, Charles was a big fan of Oppenheimer

'Oppenheimer' poster
via Universal Pictures

The 3-hour-long biopic starring Cillian Murphy recounts the life story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist responsible for the creation of the nuclear bomb. It makes sense that the king would like it, considering the film received near universal praise upon its release last year.

Oppenheimer was nominated for 13 Oscars and took home seven, including the big one — Best Picture — as well as statuettes for Nolan, Thomas, their leading man, and Robert Downey Jr. in the ing Actor category. It’s arguably one of Nolan’s most successful movies to date, and half of one of the biggest cultural phenomenons of the 2020s.

Revealing more about their discussion with Charles, Nolan commented on how it felt knowing the king had seen their movies.

It was very nice that he knew our work and was aware of it, and, yes, he was hoping that I would take this as encouragement to do more of it.”

Now I want to know if Charles has seen the rest of Nolan’s filmography. It’s hard to imagine him sitting down and watching The Dark Knight trilogy. Was he able to wrap his head around Inception? What did he think of Tenet? Has he seen Memento? All questions that need answering.

Anyway, there you have it, King Charles is an Oppenheimer boy, his words of praise towards Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas reveal which side of the camp he’s on in regard to the Barbenheimer debate. However, it’s not actually been confirmed whether or not he’s even seen the Barbie movie. It doesn’t really seem like his sort of thing, but then again we can’t judge a book by its cover, maybe he did see Barbie, and maybe he really liked it too.

Despite Oppenheimer generally receiving a more positive reception than the competition, let’s not forget that Barbie did incredibly well too, receiving a ton of positive attention. On top of that, Greta Gerwig’s movie about the world’s most famous doll was commercially more successful than Nolan’s magnum opus, making $1.45 billion worldwide.

An instant classic that just may have spawned Hollywood’s next obsession wonders what it was made for on streaming https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/movies/an-instant-classic-that-just-may-have-spawned-hollywoods-next-obsession-wonders-what-it-was-made-for-on-streaming/ https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/movies/an-instant-classic-that-just-may-have-spawned-hollywoods-next-obsession-wonders-what-it-was-made-for-on-streaming/#respond Wed, 18 Dec 2024 17:10:26 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/?p=1812634 This is why we're getting a 'Monopoly' movie.]]>

Say what you will about the market-driven storytelling of the MCU, the unfettered cynicism of a few too many Sony films, and the too-frequent anti-competence of every other streaming original. In all the muck, there remain countless bodies who are doing some fantastic creative work in the realm of cinema, and when homeruns are hit, the people listen.

Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap is one such body, and it was largely responsible for this niche little film called Barbie, the Greta Gerwig-masterminded fantasy comedy that decimated the box office, made the Oscars pretty in pink, and has since enjoyed the ups and downs of streaming relevance.

And right now, it’s up. Per FlixPatrol, Barbie is having a great day as the ninth most-watched film on the United States’ Netflix film charts at the time of writing, succeeding the likes of a 10th-place We’re the Millers, but falling short of the Megan Fox sci-fi thriller Subservience (fourth place) and the Taron Egerton actioner masterclass Carry-On (first place)

The film stars Robbie as Stereotypical Barbie, a doll living in the matriarchal Barbieland, and who’s always in a constant state of having the best day ever. One day, however, she starts thinking about death (like a total weirdo, of course), which leads her on an adventure to the real world in order to find the child that plays with her, in hopes of curing the child’s (and, by extension, her own) existentialism. Traveling with her is Ken, who gets a few too many ideas about how Barbieland could be different after spending some time in California.

As one of 2023’s major cultural boons alongside its box office rival Oppenheimer, Barbie is a film that has been analyzed and dissected top to bottom from just about every angle. Many viewers immediately vibed with its infectious personality, but time will prove that it’s Barbie‘s unwavering love for humanity — one that understands flaws and emotional lows as gifts, that skews the matriarchy as measuredly as the patriarchy, and that trusts its audience to bring sincerity to the viewing experience — that will truly cement its place in cinematic history.

Beyond that, it may also go on to be ed as that film that kicked off the most bizarre trend that Hollywood may ever play host to; high-concept proceedings wrapped up in classic toys, board games, and other such novelties.

Daniel Kaluuya, for instance, is still hard at work on his “surrealistic” Barney movie, while some of LuckyChap’s future ventures include a Monopoly movie, and a Sims adaptation from former Loki head director Kate Herron. Elsewhere, Hasbro Entertainment has a deal with Sony to make a Clue film (which will be produced by Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort label), while Paramount has the rights to a Play-Doh film. Vin Diesel will also be starring in a live-action Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie down the line.

Does this all sound completely dystopian? Yeah, maybe a little, but if Barbie has shown us anything, it’s that a thin IP is more than capable of ballooning into a genuinely great story, so long as it actually cares about being a story. Another way of saying that is that these movies will be awesome so long as they don’t suck, so let’s just see what happens.

If you don’t think it’s Barbie’s world and we’re all just living in it, I’ve got two words for you: ‘Barbie 2’ https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/movies/if-you-dont-think-its-barbies-world-and-were-all-just-living-in-it-ive-got-two-words-for-you-barbie-2/ https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/movies/if-you-dont-think-its-barbies-world-and-were-all-just-living-in-it-ive-got-two-words-for-you-barbie-2/#respond Sun, 15 Dec 2024 16:34:53 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/?p=1810584 It's always one step forward two steps backwards with Barbie 2]]>

Barbie is one of those movies where most people got it right away, but even the few left behind, upon a rewatch or just even thinking about it, realize that that was, in fact, a perfect movie. Now it’s up to Hollywood to do what it does best and give us a sequel. But so far it’s been complicated.

First of all, when it comes to the script, Barbie wasn’t just another blockbuster where the concept was cooked up by a Warner Bros. executive and handed off to a writer-for-hire who, while occasionally delivering fantastic work, rarely creates something truly unique. Barbie, instead, was written by two of the hottest auteur filmmakers in the business — Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, who just so happen to also be married.

In a WGA interview, the two recounted how they work together, sharing that they often write separate drafts and exchange them over time while eavesdropping to check whether their latest draft made the other one laugh. Greta Gerwig even made the Time 100 2023 list, and with such success comes endless opportunities. So, unfortunately for Barbie fans, the married couple are already deep in different stages of working on their solo projects, with Noah Baumbach in the post-production period of a film with George Clooney as the lead and Gerwig working on the latest adaptation of Chronicles of Narnia.

But that’s not to say that the two have their minds completely off Barbie Land. According to an exclusive report by The Hollywood Reporter, Gerwig and Baumbach have hatched a plan for the sequel to Barbie that they’ve already pitched to the studio and presumably they’re going to start working on it as soon as their schedule opens up and allows them. Early on, after the movie’s success, Margot Robbie, who was the driving force of the entire film as both the star, producer, and the person who handpicked Greta Gerwig for the lucrative position, dampened any hope for a sequel when she told Associated Press they didn’t plan on Barbie being a trilogy and that they put everything in the movie. So a sequel, if it were to happen, still cannot imagine what that would be.

What makes this news complicated instead of a cause for celebration is that, immediately after the news report came out, claims of a new Barbie being in the early stages of development were refuted. Warner Bros. released a statement saying that The Hollywood Reporter’s report is inaccurate, and, moreover, a representative for the duo also added that there’s “no legitimacy” to the reporting.

However, Robbie’s comments actually do make sense. The first Barbie dug deep to find the essence and interpretation of girlhood from the perspective of what Barbie means to the culture, and even the ending was reminiscent of Pinocchio finally becoming a “real boy.” So, it’s understandable for the creators of the film to try and avoid ruining that original movie. We fully understand their hesitation. At the end of the day, the goal is to avoid the fate of the critical disaster that is Joker: Folie à Deux. But maybe the challenge is good enough reason to pursue making the film.

As for what we think the next film is about, as long as it’s surprising and comes from a sincere place just like the original, then we’ll show up at the cinema. They already have Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. It’s very hard to go wrong with a starting point like that.

Mattel accidentally printed a hilariously inappropriate link on its ‘Wicked’ Barbie packaging and this is not what Glinda would’ve wanted https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/movies/mattel-accidentally-printed-a-hilariously-inappropriate-link-on-its-wicked-barbie-packaging-and-this-is-not-what-glinda-wouldve-wanted/ https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/movies/mattel-accidentally-printed-a-hilariously-inappropriate-link-on-its-wicked-barbie-packaging-and-this-is-not-what-glinda-wouldve-wanted/#respond Mon, 11 Nov 2024 09:45:34 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/?p=1788422 "Whoever did this needs to be fired."]]>

In news that would send Glind the Good Witch into a tizzy, Mattel has mistakenly printed a NSFW link on the packaging of its Wickedinspired Barbie dolls.

It’s a version of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie that absolutely no one asked for, and it was uncovered when purchasers of the doll — modeled after Ariana Grande’s incarnation of Glinda in the anticipated musical adaptation — followed a URL printed on the back of the package. Movie musical fans eager to get a taste of the movie, which co-stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, got more than they bargained for when the link asked if they were aged 18 years or older.

It appears Mattel, who collaborated with Wicked production company Universal, accidentally listed the URL Wicked.Com, instead of the film’s official domain of WickedMovie.com. The former is a pornographic site with a description touting its “commitment to producing quality parody porn movies.” While Wicked itself is not parodied on the site (yet), Wicked.com does have X-rated spoofs of Captain Marvel and Black Widow. Fittingly for a female-led film like Wicked, the NSFW site is for same-sex attracted women, so there are no scarecrows or tin men in sight.

While the dollmakers have since responded to the misprinted link, the damage had already been done. Scores of Wicked-inspired Barbies are currently being sold at Target, Amazon, and Kohl’s, and many buyers promptly took to social media to express their shock and frustration about the decidedly child-unfriendly mistake.

“Hey Mattel whoever is responsible for your marketing/packaging for the new official Wicked dolls have made a HUGE mistake,” one wrote on X, with another demanding that “whoever did this needs to be fired immediately cuz why would they do that knowing that it’s mostly kids buying these dolls.” Much of the online chatter about the incident arose around the Los Angeles premiere of Wicked, which took place over the weekend and saw stars Grande, Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, and Michelle Yeoh take to the fittingly yellow-bricked carpet.

Responding to the misprint in a press statement, Mattel said they “deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this.” The toymakers advised parents that the link appearing on their Barbie packaging is “not appropriate for children,” and advised those who’ve already purchased the dolls to “discard the product packaging or obscure the link.” It comes a few months after Grande and Erivo shared a video reaction to their first time seeing themselves in Barbie form, with the latter actress saying it was a “dream come true to be realized as Elphaba and Glinda in the form of Sweet Little dolls.”

The Barbie/Wicked fusion (minus the porn), was in full effect at the premiere, as Grande stepped out in a muted pink gown reminiscent of Margot Robbie’s fuschia-splattered press tour. Both Grande and Erivo have received praise for their performances in early reviews of Wicked, with one critic describing the film — a prequel to The Wizard of Oz that originated as a Tony-winning musical — as a cinematic spectacle. Wicked hits cinemas worldwide later this month, but no word yet on when Wicked.com’s inevitable parody of it drops.

Those of you who don’t peek your heads too deeply into the film world may not have a Pavlovian response to the word “LuckyChap,” but those who do know that they can expect great things whenever those big pink letters rear their head before a film begins to play.

Indeed, LuckyChap Entertainment — the production company co-founded by one Margot Robbie — has quite loudly been beefing up the cinema zeitgeist for some time now. Most recently, we have it to thank in part for the joyous juggernaut that is Barbie, as well as Saltburn, the best movie featuring a scene where Barry Keoghan licks semen out of a bathtub drain ever made. LuckyChap’s latest hit, however, is My Old Ass, and the Prime Video denizens are eating it up right now.

Per FlixPatrol, My Old Ass has debuted at the top of the Prime Video charts in the United States at the time of writing, beating out the likes of sci-fi stinker Infinite, middling zombie fare Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End, and unadventurous action thriller Canary Black. There’s poetry inherent in a quaint little coming-of-age film standing tall against more ambitious and poorly-executed thrills.

My Old Ass introduces Maisy Stella as Elliott, a recent high school grad who’s stoked to move away from her life on her family’s farm and into the big city of Toronto. When she does mushrooms in the woods with her friends to celebrate, she manifests a woman in her late 30s (Aubrey Plaza) who turns out to be Elliott from the future. Not one to miss out on the opportunity presented here, Elliott seeks out wisdom from her older self and endeavors to lap up as much as her older self is willing to give. Her most important piece of advice? Do not, under any circumstances whatsoever, get involved with a boy named Chad. Then, Elliott meets a boy named Chad (Percy Hynes White).

My Old Ass
Image via Amazon MGM Studios

The greatest strength of My Old Ass is the subversive skeleton of its queer storytelling. Elliott is a lesbian, but she isn’t initially written as a queer character on of her relationship to love and attraction being fairly narrow and conventional. In this way, Elliott’s most interesting arc comes in the form of learning how to be comfortable in her queerness, which is different from solely being comfortable with one’s sexuality.

Unfortunately, this aspect of the film is undercut by its misguided attempts at building drama with its core tension (namely, the mystery of why Older Elliott is so adamant that Elliott avoid Chad). The film treats the eventual revelation as a big reveal, but, while the textual reason for Older Elliott’s adamance may catch viewers off-guard, it’s not actually the revelation itself that we’re responding to, but the emotional fallout of it. Then the revelation finally comes and there’s not enough runtime left to dig into the nuances of that emotional fallout in as meaningful a way as it deserves.

A better version of My Old Ass would have built itself around Elliott wrestling with that emotional fallout rather than the pseudo-mystery of why Chad is not to be engaged with, especially considering how much more it would have elevated Elliott’s arc and the film’s themes as a whole. Regardless, Ass is doing anything but sitting on its own, and you should certainly plop down on yours now that this flick is the #1 distraction you need this weekend.

Ariana Grande is bringing back Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ press tour with the most dazzling Glinda outfits https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/celebrities/ariana-grande-is-bringing-back-margot-robbies-barbie-press-tour-with-the-most-dazzling-glinda-outfits/ https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/celebrities/ariana-grande-is-bringing-back-margot-robbies-barbie-press-tour-with-the-most-dazzling-glinda-outfits/#respond Wed, 30 Oct 2024 21:49:40 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/?p=1779178 No one dared to doubt Ariana Grande's sense of style but wow, I need this press tour to never end.]]>

In 2023, Barbie took over the world and became a whole movement, leading to a worldwide shortage of pink. Margot Robbie promoted the film by wearing Barbie-inspired outfits and she created a trend to follow, because Ariana Grande is doing the same for the Wicked press tour.

Earlier this summer, Blake Lively attempted to recreate Robbie’s popularity when premiering It Ends With Us. Her character, a florist, gave her endless opportunities to flaunt gorgeous floral dresses, but the message of the film — which revolved around domestic violence — didn’t allow her to fulfill her Barbie dreams, and Lively’s seemingly glib approach led to a wave of backlash.

Ariana Grande, however, is at liberty to do as she pleases for her film. The famous pop star is making her way back to film with a role in the adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked, where she plays Glinda, and everything she has worn so far has been magical and spot-on with her character.

Ariana Grande’s latest white look was a Wicked dream

Method dressing is getting more and more popular, and Grande and her co-star Cynthia Erivo applied this throughout the year to promote their Jon M. Chu musical. Grande, who plays Glinda, dressed in pink, while Erivo, who plays Elphaba, was dressed in green.

For the latest event as she attended the WSJ Innovator Awards, Ariana Grande strayed from the pink all while keeping her character with a new fashion style. The “7 Rings” singer was Glinda-worthy with a white ensemble.

Wearing a white strapless Vivienne Westwood lace gown with a signature Westwood corset from the 2024 bridal collection., the actress was a dream as she embodied Glinda‘s voluminous skirt fashion style. She accessorized with Swarovski jewelry, as she has recently become a brand ambassador for the company.

She wore the Millenia clip earrings, paired with a mixed-cut Matrix necklace, a Millenia chocker, and a Matrix ring. She continued the white-out look with a pair of Gianvito Rossi pumps and donned a white sparkly makeup courtesy of her R.E.M. makeup brand and a sleek bun.

Ariana was at the WSJ Innovator event for business but she also had time to have fun. Singer Charlie XCX shared a selfie as she hung out with Grande and model Emily Ratajkowski, and the two seemed to have had a lot of fun together throughout the night.

Although she has flaunted several pink outfits, including a feather Balenciaga strapless gown and Valentino rose pumps, she stepped up her white look at a special Wicked screening in New York City with a custom Versace ensemble, which included a retro Versace asymmetrical vest and skirt.

Ariana Grande and her stylist, Mimi Cuttrell, have been working hard the entire tour. The two had fun taking inspiration from her Wicked role at the 2024 Academy Museum Gala earlier this month, where she combined Glinda’s Old Hollywood style with a modern one with a white polka dot 1963 Pierre Balmain gown.

Wicked will premiere in theaters on Nov. 22 but we can’t have enough of her princess looks, as she proved she understood the assignment, leaving us all wanting more.

‘She fell like a Barbie’: Sabrina Carpenter lookalike decides to take ride home into her own hands, and gets humiliated within 10 seconds https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/social-media/sabrina-carpenter-lookalike-decides-to-take-ride-home-into-her-own-hands-and-gets-humiliated-within-10-seconds/ https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/social-media/sabrina-carpenter-lookalike-decides-to-take-ride-home-into-her-own-hands-and-gets-humiliated-within-10-seconds/#respond Tue, 27 Aug 2024 18:00:44 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/?p=1745212 Luckily, there were a bunch of Kens to lend a hand. ]]>

Greta Gerwig seems to be taking her sweet time in making a Barbie sequel, so one honorary inhabitant of Barbieland has decided to get her own follow-up to the iconic film off the ground. Literally, in fact, as a Sabrina Carpenter lookalike went viral on TikTok after a spot of high street travel went hilariously, humiliatingly awry.

One of the most memorable scenes from Barbie saw Margot Robbie’s plastic heroine rollerblading through a public place, only for her unconventional antics to draw all kinds of attention for the wrong reasons. The unfortunate friend of TikToker @estellegrainger now knows a little something of what that feels like after her jaunt on an electric scooter in the middle of a busy street didn’t go to plan.

“No uber, no problem,” EG captioned her video, which shows her friend attempting to get herself home on a rental e-scooter. Tragically, her ride lasts all of 10 seconds before she swerves straight into a bus stop — hitting it with a loud and sudden thud that is comedic gold — and then tumbles to the floor in a way that is… well, let’s say very demure, very cutesy, very mindful. As one comment put it, “She fell like a Barbie.”

TikTok had a LOT of takeaways from this perfect encapsulation of public humiliation, including the fact that EG’s hysterical laughter throughout makes it 10 times funnier and equally as relatable. “Love the fact that you just laugh instead of helping her,” one person wrote, “you is me!!” Others were tickled by the way the friend’s fall sent out a distress call to every straight male — or Ken, if you will — in the surrounding area. “Every guy in the city running to pick her up!” someone joked, while another hoped that she at least got someone’s number out of this ordeal: “That’s one way to get a man’s attention.”

Most of all, though, folks can’t believe how much this woman/e-scooter crash test dummy looks like a certain sandy-haired superstar. “I thought that was Sabrina Carpenter,” is a comment shared over and over again underneath this video. “I watched this 10 times before realizing this wasn’t Sabrina Carpenter,” another itted. Maybe there’s a longer version of this video where it turns out Jenna Ortega sabotaged the e-scooter before “Sabrina” got on?

This whole incident is just one more item to add to the wider controversy surrounding e-scooters, which have some conflicting and strict rules of usage across the Atlantic. In the U.K., privately owned e-scooters are illegal in public spaces, but a nationwide rental scheme is in place instead. In the U.S., e-scooters are legal in all states, barring Pennsylvania and Delaware. You also need to have a driver’s license to ride an e-scooter in the U.K. but don’t in the U.S. The legal top speed is set at just 15.5 mph in the U.K. while in the U.S. it’s 30 mph.

So, yes, they’re good for the environment, but they can lead to slow-speed embarrassment, so really, what’s the gain? Maybe all Barbies, honorary or otherwise, should stick to rollerblading.

Ariana Greenblatt’s ethnicity, confirmed https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/celebrities/ariana-greenblatts-ethnicity-confirmed/ https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/celebrities/ariana-greenblatts-ethnicity-confirmed/#respond Thu, 08 Aug 2024 12:01:24 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/?p=1736390 The actress is promoting representation.]]>

Ariana Greenblatt has appeared in some of the biggest films of the 21st century. She has played pivotal roles in Avengers: Infinity War and Barbie. Both grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, with the former ranking as the sixth highest grossing film of all time. Did we mention she’s still a teenager?

That’s right, Greenblatt has amassed a career most would kill for before graduating high school. Barring any major career changes, the actress is going to be in our lives and on our screens for a long time. Given the wide range of characters Greenblatt has played including the young Ahsoka Tano, some fans may be curious about her ethnicity. That’s what we’re here to help clarify!

Ariana Greenblatt is biracial. Her mother, Soli Greenblatt, is Puerto Rican, while her father, Shon Greenblatt, is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent. The actress proudly sports both sides of her ethnic makeup. In general, Ariana Greenblatt has been cast to play Latinx characters, or younger versions of characters portrayed by actresses who are Latinx.

Some of the most notable examples of this include Avengers: Infinity War, in which Ariana Greenblatt played the younger version of Gamora. The adult version is played by Zoe Saldana, who is of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent. Another instance was Greenblatt’s appearance on the Disney Plus series Ahsoka. She played a younger version of the titular character, while the bulk of the Star Wars drama revolved around Puerto Rican actress Rosario Dawson.

Ariana Greenblatt has done her part to champion Latinx representation onscreen. She played Latinx characters in films like In the Heights (2021) and the aforementioned Barbie. She does, however, acknowledge that there is still a long way to go.

A big part of Greenblatt’s career plan, up to this point and beyond, is to avoid negative stereotypes in the roles she accepts. She elaborated on this point during a 2020 interview with Civilian Magazine. “I stay away from negative-stereotype roles,” she asserted, before adding:

Even if they have some huge director or studio behind them. I’m hyper-aware of my audience and my fan base, which are predominantly other girls just like me, so I always try to that.

Ariana Greenblatt’s plan seems to be working out perfectly. We can’t wait to see what she does next.

How did Margot Robbie and her husband meet? https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/celebrities/how-did-margot-robbie-and-her-husband-meet/ https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/celebrities/how-did-margot-robbie-and-her-husband-meet/#respond Wed, 10 Jul 2024 13:40:10 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.crackfree.org/?p=1721434 So, healthy Hollywood relationships do exist after all.]]>

In the glamorous world of Hollywood, where relationships often burn bright and fizzle out just as quickly, Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley‘s love story stands out as a refreshingly down-to-earth tale. The Oscar-nominated actress and her filmmaker husband have been going strong since 2014, building both a personal and professional partnership that’s become the envy of Tinseltown.

And how did this couple’s story begin? Let’s start in 2013, when fate brought them together on the set of the World War II drama Suite Française. Robbie, on the cusp of superstardom, was cast in the film, while Ackerley worked behind the scenes as a third assistant director. Little did they know that this project would change their lives forever.

At first, it was all about friendship. Robbie hit it off with the crew, including Ackerley, and they decided to take their camaraderie to the next level by becoming roommates. Along with a group of friends, they moved into a house in London’s Clapham neighborhood. It was in this quaint but chaotic setting that their relationship began to blossom. Robbie, who once described herself as “the ultimate single gal,” found her perspective on relationships shifting.

She itted to Vogue in 2016, “I was always in love with him, but I thought, ‘Oh, he would never love me back. Don’t make it weird, Margot.'”

But as it turns out, Ackerley felt the same way. Their friendship eventually turned romantic, and by 2014, they were officially an item. The couple managed to keep their relationship under wraps for a while, but word eventually got out among their roommates. Robbie recalled the revelation as being relatively dramatic, joking that their house turned into “The Jerry Springer Show” for a moment.

“Everyone was, like: ‘No! This is going to ruin our group!’ And then it didn’t. It was fine.”

As their love grew, so did their professional ambitions. In 2014, Robbie and Ackerley, along with friends Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr, founded LuckyChap Entertainment. This production company would go on to produce critically acclaimed films like I, Tonya, Promising Young Woman, and the box office smash we all love, Barbie.

The couple’s relationship only continued to flourish, and in December 2016, they tied the knot in a private ceremony on Australia’s Gold Coast. True to their low-key nature, they didn’t publicly announce their engagement beforehand. Robbie confirmed the news with a cheeky Instagram post, showing off her ring while kissing her new husband.

Since then, Robbie and Ackerley have maintained a relatively private personal life while still managing to make waves in the film industry. They’ve occasionally graced red carpets together, looking every bit the Hollywood power couple. But it’s their work ethic and shared ion for storytelling that truly defines their partnership.

In a 2019 interview, Robbie commented on working with her husband, saying,

“We can talk about work all the time. And then work feels like fun.” She added, “I think it’s crazy that not all couples get along.”

Now, in 2024, Robbie and Ackerley are embarking on their biggest adventure yet – parenthood. Multiple sources confirmed to People that the couple is expecting their first child, with Robbie spotted showing off her baby bump during a vacation in Lake Como.

As they prepare for this new chapter, it’s clear that the foundation of friendship and mutual respect that brought them together on that film set over a decade ago continues to be the cornerstone of their relationship. From co-workers to friends, to lovers, to business partners, and now soon-to-be parents, Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley’s journey is a testament to the power of organic connection in an industry often criticized for its superficiality.

As they continue to each other both personally and professionally, Robbie and Ackerley prove that in Hollywood, it is possible to have it all – a thriving career, a successful business, and a loving partnership built on friendship and shared dreams.
