The 'Captain America' star ruffled a few feather while discussing how he raises his sons. ]]>
<![CDATA[

Anthony Mackie has once again gotten tongues wagging with divisive comments, this time when discussing his views on masculinity. The Captain America: Brave New World star shared his thoughts on the topic during a recent podcast appearance on The Pivot. za25

When discussing fatherhood and how he raises his children, the actor lamented what he called “the death of the American male” throughout the past two decades. “In the past 20 years, we’ve been living through the death of the American male,” he said. “They have literally killed masculinity in our homes [and] in our communities, for one reason or another.”

While he didn’t elaborate on how masculinity has been subject to a “death” — or exactly what that means — Mackie did say he is raising his sons in a way that defies this trend. “I raise my boys to be young men, and however you feel about that, you feel about that.” Mackie provided a clearer picture of what he perceives as raising “young men” later in the interview, saying he teaches his sons to always say thank you, open doors for women, and take care of their mom.

“So, for me, that idea of American masculinity is very different,” Mackie added. According to Mackie, this masculine ideal he speaks of is understood by his eldest son, who “gets it” and instills it in his siblings. “My oldest gets it, my 15-year-old,” Mackie said. “Once you get one that’s right, he’s going to straighten the other ones out.” While complaining about the state of masculinity might raise a few eyebrows, it seems Mackie’s vision of what constitutes a ‘man’ isn’t exactly controversial, at least according to the qualities he wants for his kids.

“I keep my boys humble,” he said. “My boys have never had a pair of Jordans… you could be the biggest star in the world but do not let me catch you being stupid.” Touching on such a hot-button topic was bound to provoke a few reactions, which is exactly what happened on social media. Observers were split between praising Mackie for the version of masculinity he wants for his sons, and criticizing him for claiming there are only certain ways they can be masculine in the first place.

One er wrote that Mackie’s comments highlight how “there’s a clear difference between masculinity and toxic masculinity,” and commended the actor for being a “great role model” of the former. Other s praised Mackie for “respecting masculinity properly” rather than focussing on how it can become toxic or applauded him for, regardless of gender, “nam[ing] things that anyone should be doing, male or female.”

However, not everyone was thrilled with Mackie’s take on masculinity, with one arguing that “saying ‘death of american male’ makes it sound like he is against feminism” when in reality he is just advocating for “being a respectful citizen.” Another agreed with that sentiment, writing that they “thought this was gonna be some pathetic alpha male bs but he’s literally just saying he wants his sons to be good people.”

Regardless of where you land in your thoughts on the comments, this is not the first time Mackie has divided opinion in recent months. In January, the actor came under fire for saying that while the character of “Captain America represents a lot of different things,” he doesn’t “think the term ‘America’ should be one of those representations.” He later clarified those statements and confirmed that he is a “proud American,” but not without incurring the wrath of particularly patriotic Marvel fans.

Real ones know that Mackie's just missing his bestie]]>

Anthony Mackie might have stepped on some toes in a recent interview where he threw some shade at his forever bro Sebastian Stan. The Captain America: Brave New World actor named Stan as his least talented scene partner, and we aren’t having it. But anyone familiar with Hollywood’s favorite bromance won’t help but laugh, especially when you hear Mackie’s reasons.

Anthony Mackie takes a shot at Sebastian Stan 3d2m62

Just like Sam and Bucky in the MCU, Mackie and Stan love to tease each other, so when Mackie was asked a particular question during the Brave New World press tour, his answer didn’t surprise anyone.

Mackie and his Brave New World co-star, Danny Ramirez, stopped by the set of First We Feat, for an episode of Hot Ones Versus. The pair had to ask each other questions, and if the other couldn’t answer, they had to eat a spicy wing. Mackie already had Ramirez on the ropes, after fearlessly answering any questions lobbed at him, no matter who he offended, but fans really thought Ramirez had him on this one. The question read, “Rank these Captain America scene partners from most to least talented: Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Danny Ramirez.”

Unfortunately for Ramirez, Mackie was willing to welcome the smoke, and emphatically answered. “Chris Evans, Danny Ramirez, **** Sebastian Stan,” he said. Knowing how much the two love to tease each other, it wasn’t a surprise that Mackie would put Stan at the bottom of that list, just for laughs. He also went on to list his hilarious reasons for putting Stan at the bottom. “He got a Golden Globe, an Oscar nomination… he got a new girlfriend– he’s got everything.”

Keeping the bromance alive 49534v

If you’re not familiar with Mackie and Stan’s bromance, or “Stacky,” as their fans have dubbed them, his ranking of Stan at the bottom might seem mean. But, it is just a rollover of their decade-plus-long bromance, from when they first shared the screen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. While their characters had some funny on-screen moments during the movie, it was the actor’s chemistry during the press tour and on red carpets that solidified the pairing.

They have countless inside jokes, memes, and running gags, such as Mackie’s love for Stans’s couch, Stan teasing Mackie over not being able to use social media, and Mackie fawning over Stan’s “steel blue eyes” that “let you know where home is.”

Despite constantly poking fun at each other, their friendship is undeniably full of love and . Both actors have appeared on each other’s projects’ red carpets and shown nothing but pride for the other over their achievements. Mackie isn’t even as bitter at Stan’s Oscar nom, as he suggested in the Hot Ones Versus. After all, during another interview with On Demand Entertainment, he proudly raved about how he had a huge party planned to celebrate the nomination, regardless of whether Stan won or not.

This is a bromance that we’ll never tire of, and we’ll be eagerly waiting for the next time Mackie crashes one of Stan’s red carpet interviews.

Marvel snipers: "On your left..." ]]>
<![CDATA[

Move over, Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Mackie is coming for your crown as the MCU’s biggest leak. The Sam Wilson star has always been known for having zero filter, so now that he’s the lead of Marvel’s latest, Captain America: Brave New World, and is having to do 616 press appearances a day he’s saying so much he probably shouldn’t that Kevin Feige is no doubt sweating through his baseball cap.

In fact, in the run-up to Brave New World hitting theaters this Valentine’s Day weekend, I count at least three big spoilers for next year’s Avengers: Doomsday that Mackie has spoiled ahead of time. For starters, the former Falcon actor went and confirmed reports that Doomsday will start shooting in the U.K. very soon (in March, to be precise), as well as confirming that its follow-up, Secret Wars, will go into production a year later in summer 2026.

“We shoot in London through the summer and then the following summer we shoot the next one [Avengers: Secret Wars],” he revealed to Deadline. It’s going to be a full slate.”

What’s more, in the same interview, Mackie laid out what’s next for his character for the first time. It seems Doomsday will see Sam assembling his own team of Avengers made up of those next-gen heroes who have been introduced across the Multiverse Saga so far. While we could’ve guessed this for ourselves, it’s still nice to have it confirmed, even if the studio doesn’t want us knowing anything about the plot of Avengers 5 just yet.

“I’m the Avenger from the old group that brings in the new group. So it’ll be a changing of the guard,” Mackie came clean. “As you see in the new trailer, Ross is like, ‘I want you to start up The Avengers.’ So I have to figure out who’s going to be the new Avengers. That’s the perk of being Captain America. I get to pick who I want to hang out with.”

The biggest thing Mackie has let slip during his Brave New World press tour, though, has to be the eyebrow-raising hint he made about some beloved old faces returning in Doomsday. During a filmed interview with co-star Danny Ramirez, Mackie appeared to unveil that Robert Downey Jr. won’t be the only OG Avenger coming back.

“I think for me, I’m really excited about the idea of old meeting new,” Mackie says when asked what he’s excited about for his character’s future. “The OG original cast of the MCU and all the new people coming together to form this massive conglomerate…”

Ramirez then looks extremely concerned by Mackie’s big mouth, asking him “Is that what happens">multiversal (perhaps villainous) variants of themselves. If it is happening, though, then it’s likely one of the film’s most closely guarded secrets. Let’s hope Mackie kept one of Cap’s prop shields, because he might need it when the Marvel snipers come for him.

Some early reactions to Captain America: Brave New World are positive. Enthusiastic, even. With the endless reshoots the film underwent, though, and the downward trend Marvel has been experiencing in the last few years, I think we are allowed to be a little surprised.

There were rumors the first test screenings for Brave New World weren’t exactly successful, thrusting the crew into additional reshoots at the start of 2024, lasting nearly six months. Adding to that were reports that three major sequences had to be cut and that brand-new writers and cast were being added last minute, including Giancarlo Esposito.

That sort of modus operandi has rarely ever worked out for Marvel, with some of its biggest flops such as Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, The Marvels, Secret Invasion and Echo also requiring extensive reshoots and a lot of editing room action.

The film is Anthony Mackie’s first solo outing as the new Captain America and the introduction of blockbuster king Harrison Ford to the MCU, taking over for the late William Hurt in the role of Thaddeus Ross. The occasion alone demanded Marvel be on its very best game, but making the most competent movie possible should have been the superhero juggernaut’s top priority regardless, considering James Gunn’s new and improved DC Universe is about to come knocking.

Thankfully, it sounds like fans of the genre (the people whose reactions the franchise is most interested in, surely) loved it. Nerdist Editor-in-Chief Rotem Rusak says the movie “brought to life the best of the MCU” as she complimented its “sharp” action, “simmering” mystery and tension, and “interesting” political themes. For @TheConnorWeb on X, Brave New World isn’t “groundbreaking,” but it still did not disappoint, with Mackie “[cementing] himself as the ‘Star Spangled Man.’”

POC Culture found it “MASSIVELY entertaining” — all caps — praising the leading duo of Mackie and Danny Ramirez for bringing heart to the story. Slightly more biased is Wong Updates, a Marvel fan , who called the film “a cinematic gem” that delivers “a mix of Winter Soldier and The Dark Knight.” They also declared that “Old Marvel is back on the menu.” Take that with a tremendous grain of salt, but, hey!, if one person saw all of that in Brave New World, then maybe there really is something to work with among those patched-up 118 minutes of runtime.

As Marvel fans, we’re hoping we’ll leave the theater in agreement with these takes. Still, we can’t help but feel duly frustrated that the production studio seems more interested in fixing any issues in post-production than in giving creators the bandwidth, freedom, and to simply create a great script. Or, I don’t know, just make better choices.

So, let’s hope Brave New World lives up to its title and doesn’t end up cowardly, dated, and small, instead. It arrives in theaters Friday, Feb. 14.

Is it too late to save 'Captain America: Brave New World' from the boycott?]]>
<![CDATA[

Anthony Mackie has awoken the Marvel mob. In a recent Q&A, the actor made waves within the fandom (and not in a good way) when he said his on-screen character, Captain America, doesn’t represent America. Now Mackie has released a statement trying to explain himself.

Posting to his Instagram, Mackie attempted some damage control prior to the release of Captain America: Brave New World, which is due to hit theaters on Valentine’s Day. He clarified that he is “a proud American” and that he has the “utmost respect for those who serve and have served our country.” Anthony finished his paragraph by saying that “CAP has universal characteristics that people all over the world can relate to.” Knowing the specific crowd that he has upset, it’s doubtful whether this will be enough to quell their anger, especially considering it’s not an outright apology.

The comments underneath most of his recent Instagram posts are still filled with angry fans calling him “woke” and predicting that the movie would bomb thanks to him. In reality, Brave New World probably is going to bomb, but not because of Mackie; Marvel just seems to have forgotten how to make good movies and the billion re-shoots this movie went through certainly won’t have helped. It’s extremely doubtful that his comments would really make or break the movie, but it will be a convenient scapegoat for all those fans who blame “wokeness” for Marvel’s recent downfall.

Mackie’s initial statement really did rock the boat, though, and so close to the release of the movie, too. It’s no wonder he’s on damage control. Over on X, people called for boycotts of the movie and others wrote that they wanted to see Bucky as the new Captain America, but amidst this entire controversy, it’s becoming more and more obvious that Mackie’s words really weren’t that far from the truth.

Anthony’s statement proves that this was all blown out of proportion 4k4l73

Was what he said really that bad? Mackie’s Instagram story simply reiterates a point that seems to have been lost during the original Q&A. It seems what he was trying to say was that Captain America stands for something more than his country: he’s a character that people from all over the world can look up to.

Those calling out Mackie online right now don’t seem to understand that Captain America isn’t some tool, mindlessly waving the American flag and blindly ing the U.S. regardless of whether it’s right or wrong; however, that’s all these people complaining about the situation online seem to think he is. Sure, Mackie’s phrasing was a little clunky, but he has a point, and so it’s unlikely he’s going to bow down to the angry mob and apologize. I don’t think he should anyway.

<![CDATA[

After years of bad press, PR nightmares, and headline-grabbing controversies, Marvel must’ve been desperately hoping that at least the last fortnight before the release of Captain America: Brave New World (coming Feb. 14) would go by without a hitch. But there was no chance of that with this cursed movie, and its the star of the show, Anthony Mackie himself, who has riled up the internet once more with a statement so inflammatory it might as well have come from the Human Torch.

Mackie was asked a big question while talking part in a Q&A about the film, and his response earned an even bigger backlash. When asked what Captain America represents for him, the former Falcon replied, “Captain America represents a lot of different things and I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those representations. It’s about a man who keeps his word, who has honor, dignity and integrity.”

Yes, the current Captain America said that his Captain America doesn’t, and shouldn’t, represent America. As you would expect, everyone reacted to this with extreme calm and an open mind.

JK, now people want to boycott his film, burn all copies of it, and probably rub the ashes on their face and dance around the fire. Mackie’s comments have been branded as “woke” and “pandering,” with many predicting that Brave New World will end up being a “disaster” for Disney because its cast and crew are out of touch with what the population of Trump’s America really want.

“Captain America does represent America my dude. It’s literally in the name,” said one commentator, who presumably thinks everyone with arachnophobia should be terrified of Tom Holland.

Others think “INSTA-CLOWN” Mackie’s take on the character is disrespectful to that of Stan Lee (who, uh, didn’t actually create Captain America).

Of course, this led to the ol’ “Bucky should’ve been the next Cap” argument making a comeback.

The search is over, everyone: I think we’ve found the most soul-deadening, stomach-churning tweet ever posted.

Why Anthony Mackie’s Captain America hot take might have a point 4hg5y

At first glance, it’s easy for anyone, regardless of your political persuasion or feelings on woke culture, to feel confused or even offended by Mackie’s hot take on the First Avenger — well, he’s Captain America, how can he not represent America?

When you think about it, though, his comments — even if they could’ve used some elaboration — aren’t as controversial as they appear. What Mackie was perhaps intending to say is that Cap doesn’t represent America the state, America the government, but America the people, America the spirit. In that regard, this is a clear theme running through Chris Evans’ universally beloved incarnation — in The Winter Soldier, Civil War, and Infinity War, Steve is portrayed as a fugitive on the run from the country that used to treat him as a poster boy.

And though some may think this interpretation of Cap goes against his comic book portrayal, the actual evidence suggests otherwise. In one eyebrow-raising page from 1985’s What If…? #44, Steve Rogers emerges from the ice into the U.S.A. of the 1980s and is horrified by what he finds. “Well, I say America is nothing!” he proclaims. “Without its ideals–its commitment to the freedom of all men, America is a piece of trash!” Just be glad Mackie didn’t say that.

One tweeter summed it up perfectly. “Anthony Mackie is spot-on here,” they said. “MCU Steve Rogers was never this nationalist guy who was always about America specifically… That’s what the Captain America mantle is about in the MCU. Being a selfless protector of lives and freedom in a chaotic world of corrupt leaders.”

Captain America representing more than America should hardly come as a surprise after 14 years of the character being a globally popular movie character whose appeal extends far beyond the 50 states. Like the man says, whoever is holding that vibranium shield represents “honor, dignity, and integrity” first and foremost. In other words, he doesn’t represent America. He represents the best of America. He’s not the face of America as it is, but as it should be. A brave new world, indeed.

Back before Thanos snapped away 50% of the franchise's dignity.]]>
<![CDATA[

We’re just a few weeks out before the final stretch of Phase Five of the MCU kicks off with Captain America: Brave New World. While the franchise’s future hopes are riding more on Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, there’s no shortage of responsibility on Brave New World‘s shoulders, either.

Indeed, not only will it have to narratively step up where so many other Marvel films have failed (yes, even Deadpool & Wolverine), but it will have to do so while honoring the legacy of the Captain America films that came before it. According to leading man Anthony Mackie, however, we’d be wise to expect exactly those accomplishments.

In a recent BTS featurette for the incoming superhero flick, Mackie made sure to emphasize that this is a proper Captain America movie we have on our hands. He noted how he believes audiences will appreciate the film “bringing it back to old-school Marvel,” in reference to the heyday of the Infinity Saga, which houses such heavyweights as Black Panther, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Iron Man.

Mackie and producer/Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige also hyped up the franchise debut of the legendary Harrison Ford, who will take on the role of President Thaddeus Ross from the late William Hurt, who ed away in 2022. Mackie in particular felt inspired watching the former Indiana Jones star carve out a place for himself in the Marvel mythos.

Now, is it entirely within the realm of possibility that this is mostly a bunch of marketing hokum that’s more than willing to stretch the truth in order to make it seem like the MCU is back, as the kids say? Yes, absolutely. All the marketing team has to do is get butts in seats; whether or not the film itself lines up with the promises being made remains to be seen.

As such, we’d be wise to temper our expectations. Mackie’s promises about Brave New World have been frequent and intriguing, having notably told Entertainment Weekly last year that the film will be a franchise reset of sorts, ushering in new themes and trajectories and tones for the MCU canon going forward. That’s not an insignificant statement by any stretch.

Still, the amount of rewriting done on Brave New World‘s script is far from a good sign, and so even if it dips its toe into the refreshing genre pool of spy action/political thriller, there’s really no telling how severely Brave New World may have had to bend the knee to their Disney overlords or creatively-inept shareholders.

Whatever the case, this movie is going to be a whole lot of Marvel. Along with being Mackie’s first leading role in a major Marvel movie, Brave New World will also see the return of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s Isaiah Bradley, who many are expecting will pave the way for the character Eli Bradley (aka Patriot) as the MCU sets up its Young Avengers.

Red Hulk and the Serpent Society will also enter the fray, and the film will also mark the return of Tim Blake Nelson’s Leader, whose last appearance in the franchise was in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters on Feb. 14.

One of the big winners at the 2025 Golden Globes was Sebastian Stan. The actor took home the Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy award for his role in A Different Man, but it’s his bromance with Anthony Mackie that stole the show.

Mackie, the leading man of the Captain America: Brave New World, was all smiles every time Stan was in view, or even mentioned. Their reunion immediately reignited hopes of a return to the screen, and Mackie’s comments after the ceremony didn’t help matters. Are we delusional to be excited about a possible reunion of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes in the MCU?

A promise of things to come? 1p3e2l

In a very wholesome moment at last night’s ceremony, Anthony Mackie gleefully and wholeheartedly became Stan’s biggest fanboy. While in an interview speaking about his win, Stan was approached by a very happy Mackie. The new Captain America repeatedly chanted “we won” as he crashed Stan’s interview.

As they both celebrated, Sebastian Stan said some words that made Marvel fans perk up in excitement. “Captain America and the Winter Soldier, we’re coming back,” the actor yelled. Now, was he jesting, or did he actually mean what he said? Nobody knows for sure, but fans are elated nonetheless.

With Captain America: Brave New World being released on Valentine’s Day, Mackie’s return to the big screen is closer than ever. Stan himself is set to lead the pack in Thunderbolts, closing out Phase Five of the MCU in May. Evidently, we don’t have the answers to any of these questions right now, but Marvel, we urge you to give us fans what we want!

Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan as Falcon and the Winter Soldier
Screengrab via Disney Plus

While the MCU has suffered a noticeable decline in quality over the last few years, they have released some phenomenal stuff since their inception. From The Winter Soldier to Infinity War, it’s fair to say Marvel aficionados have eaten good. And, it has not escaped fans’ attention that both Stan and Mackie have appeared in some of the best Marvel releases over the years.

Back when Mackie’s character was still known as Falcon, he starred in Captain America: The Winter Soldier alongside Stan. Since then, they have built their bromance brick by brick, sharing the screen in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

The stuff of dreams 3c1e67

Shortly after WandaVision ended in March 2021, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier started airing on Disney Plus. It showed a new dynamic of the relationship shared by the partners-in-crime, with much of the love the fans have come to expect between the two superheroes first founded in this show.

However, six episodes just don’t cut it, and fans have been clamoring for more for four years, now. Unfortunately, their prayers remain unanswered. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is still the last time both Stan and Mackie starred in a Marvel release together. The end of the limited series saw Mackie’s character go from being The Falcon to becoming Captain America, and with Sam settling into the new mantle in his outing, getting to see Bucky’s reaction and endorsement is not just a want, but a deep need.

Move over Ben Affleck and Matt Damon… Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan are the Hollywood besties we simply can’t get enough of.

As if having the troublesome pair as co-stars hasn’t been enough, these Captain Americas continue to show off their friendship every chance they get. In fact, they’ve got some fans believing they’re secretly in love with one another, and when they’re all smiles every time they’re next to one another, what’s not to love?

The first family America needs 1z2v4o

At the Golden Globes, Mackie and Stan shared multiple bromance moments for the world to gush about. As Stan took home the Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy award for A Different Man, Mackie cheered him on. But it’s their absolutely adorable photo outside the ceremony that’s got the internet talking!

Mackie’s signature smirk is on full display as he embraces his bestie in a photo that’s seriously giving off “just wedded” vibes! The comments, all in on the joke, couldn’t help but chip in. “They look like they belong on a Christmas card,” wrote a cheeky fan. Another wrote, “This is giving vows were exchanged behind the scenes,” and “Anthony grinning like he just got the first slice of wedding cake.” ing the ranks is “This looks like the start of a Netflix series called Husbands in Harmony.”

But by far the best comment of the night goes to PJ the Trekkie, who sheepishly wrote, “From first date to happily ever after” while adding a photo of the pair from their Winter Soldier days. And honestly, we’d give anything to see these two bros back on our screen.

Reunited, and it feels so good! f154i

Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes have been a mainstay in the Captain America film series, but the duo finally had enough time to shine in their very own series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Over six episodes, Mackie and Stan proved their chemistry was off their charts, and have since become the poster for Marvel’s many bromances. Heck, even Tom Holland wanted into the fold, but couldn’t match up against the famous pair. Years ago, Mackie revealed his nickname for Stan was “sexy seabass,” while Stan calls him “choclatino.” Now that’s love!

Both actors may no longer share screen time, but in the MCU’s new phase of new faces, box office flops, and uncertainty, it’s a wonderful treat that both Stan and Mackie are still involved. While it sucks that Bucky won’t appear in Brave New World, we’re going to see an even grittier side of the soldier in Thunderbolts. Both films will be released in 2025, with Brave New World set for a Valentine’s Day release, and Thunderbolts making its way on May 2.

As both films will the lineup for the final films of the MCU’s Phase Five, there’s a lot riding on this! Thankfully, both Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes have a decent enough fanbase to drive up viewership and box office numbers. And if we’re lucky enough, there could be more of the duo in the future, and this time, back together again!

"Harrison Ford just wants to go home."]]>

Fans have reacted to Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford’s awkward presenting slot at the Golden Globes, and predicted what it could mean for their co-starring roles in Captain America: Brave New World

The pair attended the star-studded ceremony to present the award for Best Animated Picture. The trophy ultimately went to Flow, but not before Mackie and Ford engaged in an awkward exchange that left the latter looking seriously annoyed, at least according to some onlookers. After giving a shout-out to fellow Marvel actor Sebastian Stan — who had just won for his role in A Different Man — Mackie paused the preamble to allow Ford to speak.

He then interrupted the Hollywood veteran not once, but twice, to deliver a makeshift drum roll sound effect. It got some laughs from the audience, but Ford seemed entirely unamused, going as far as to push Mackie away from the microphone to announce the winner. Of course, it’s probably the case that this was a planned comedic bit, with Ford relying on his ever-trusty solemn persona to play off Mackie’s boyish charm. However, the jokey moment evidently didn’t land for some viewers.

“Harrison Ford is so done with Anthony Mackie lol,” one X wrote, with another adding that “Harrison Ford just wants to go home.” Others said the Blade Runner star “just shows up to awards shows to look grumpy as s***,” or more broadly suggested that Ford is “not a big fan of” Golden Globes host Nikki Glaser, who made a joke about the actor smoking marijuana. Regardless of how it landed, fans shouldn’t fret too much about the chemistry between Mackie and Ford ahead of Brave New World, since the former actor has been nothing but positive about his experience working with Ford for the film.

Speaking on the Golden Globes red carpet about Ford, Mackie — who takes the reins from Chris Evans for the film — said he “was surprised at how normal [Ford] was.” The actor went on to compliment Ford, who will play Thaddeus Ross/Thunderbolt, for his ability to “just chill with us like a regular person” despite his “big star” status.

The Hollywood legend took on the character after William Hurt, who originated the role in the MCU, ed away in 2022. Mackie and Ford’s presenter slot wasn’t the only one to cause a stir, with Vin Diesel enduring an awkward moment after reviving a years-old beef with his Fast and Furious co-star Dwayne Johnson. Elsewhere, Andrew Garfield got tongues wagging with the simple act of putting his glasses on, and Kieran Culkin set himself up for awards season success with a deserved win for A Real Pain.

If all that wasn’t enough, we also got an appearance from the winners of the look-alike contests for Glen Powell and Timothée Chalamet, proving that this year’s bingo card will be just as head-scratching as 2024’s. Speaking of, I need to go and tick off “look-alike appears at Golden Globes” and “Andrew Garfield inspires the internet’s thirst” off my 2025 card.

Cap and Wakanda are coming to save the MCU!]]>
<![CDATA[

The current phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has given us mixed feelings. But as the curtain falls in 2025, with the release of Thunderbolts and Captain America: Brave New World, it’s clear the best may be yet to come.

At the heart of the excitement is Brave New World’s charismatic lead, Anthony Mackie. As the new face of Captain America, Mackie has taken on a monumental role, and let’s be real, the stakes couldn’t be higher this time. But it looks like Sam Wilson’s in good hands, as a promising crossover with the brilliant minds of Wakanda have quite a bit to do with his new suit.

Wakanda to the rescue: The suit’s Vibranium secrets 5x1136

Speaking at the Disney APAC Content Showcase in Singapore, the Twisted Metal star gave fans a peek into his journey as Captain America, teased what’s coming with Red Hulk, and most importantly, revealed the story behind his jaw-dropping new suit. When asked about the new Captain America suit, Mackie couldn’t help but smile as he spilled the beans.

It’s a high-tech suit. I went to Wakanda, met with everybody there, and we had dinner. It was a great time. They threw me a welcome party. It was dope. But when I was leaving, they gave me a suit, right?

Classic Mackie charm aside, the Wakandan involvement in the suit’s creation makes perfect sense. Wakanda has been a powerhouse of innovation in the MCU, crafting everything from Bucky Barnes’ vibranium arm to Shuri’s mind-bending suit. Their signature blend of vibranium and engineering brilliance has set a gold standard for superhero gear, and the new Captain America suit would be no exception to this formality. With vibranium enhancements woven into its design, the suit provides Sam with the durability, agility, and functionality needed to go head-to-head with the MCU’s toughest foes.

Unlike Steve Rogers’ suit, which simply represented a classic superhero outfit with so much emphasis on his raw strength to get work done, Sam’s outfit is all about adaptability. The wings? Possibly reinforced with vibranium for maximum flight efficiency. The shield harness? Seamlessly integrated into the suit for quick access and tactical use. And while it retains the classic star-and-stripes aesthetic, its darker, more modern design reflects Sam’s unique journey as a hero.

From counselor to Cap, Sam Wilson holds his own 58714p

With Chris Evans leaving behind some big boots (and a hefty shield) to fill, Mackie’s Sam Wilson has already proved he’s not just up to the task but ready to make it his own. Mackie has always had a knack for teasing just enough to keep fans on their toes, and his appearance at the Disney APAC Content Showcase was no different. With his signature wit and charm, Mackie shed light on how Sam Wilson’s approach to being Captain America differs from his predecessor, Steve Rogers.

Sam isn’t a super-soldier. With him being a counselor, he uses more of his brains than brawn. He uses more of his wit than his fist. He’s more of a friend to everyone.

This unique perspective could make Sam’s Captain America stand out. He’s not trying to replicate Steve Rogers’ tenacity but is carving out a space for a hero who relies on intelligence, empathy, and sheer determination. And let’s not forget, he’ll need every ounce of those qualities when he comes face-to-face with Red Hulk, a raging beast of an opponent. Played by none other than Harrison Ford, Red Hulk is set to push Sam to his limits, challenging not just his physical capabilities but his mental resolve. So, how does someone without super-soldier serum take on a hulking, rage-fueled monster? The answer lies in the suit and the brilliant minds of Wakanda.

With Agatha All Along having officially closed shop as of last Wednesday, the mainline Marvel Cinematic Universe canon can officially set its sights on Captain America: Brave New World, which hits theaters on Feb. 14, 2025.

As what’s probably the first film that will be abiding by Marvel’s better-late-than-never, quality-over-quantity approach, fans may be expecting to reap a few more rewards than usual with this one. Brave New World‘s leading man, after all, has already gotten his fair share, although not in the form you would think.

In a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Anthony Mackie was asked what the best part about starring in his own MCU flick was, and it wasn’t the lucrative contract, nor the enormous market exposure, but the fact that he gets free fishing charters because all the fisherman want to “take Captain America fishing.”

The best part is I now get free fishing charters, you know in Louisiana fishing charters is a big deal, it can run you about $800, now I go down to the booth and they’re like ‘hey man, I wanna take Captain America fishing’ so I get free fishing charters!

The actor also sang his praises for his co-star Harrison Ford, who makes his MCU debut in Brave New World as President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, replacing the late William Hurt in the role. Mackie described him as “the coolest cat he’s ever met,” showing particular fondness for the octogenarian genre icon’s tendency to roll up on set before saying “Let’s shoot this piece of s***!”

Hopefully, of course, Brave New World is not a piece of s***. Marvel has unfortunately stopped trying to create meaningful narratives with robust characters as of late, instead opting for the irony-drenched fan service of Deadpool & Wolverine, and the foreshadowing-for-the-sake-of-foreshadowing of Agatha All Along, prioritized vibes and all.

Brave New World, however, will not be able to get away with either of those approaches (as though said approaches can be gotten away with in the first place). It places the MCU back in the hotseat of the main narrative, and will therefore be operating in a framework that demands competent drama and storytelling with an ostensibly traditional lens. In other words, that means no winking at the audience, no puzzle-esque plot gimmicks, and no redemption in the form of an all-but-guaranteed Eli Bradley setup; it can only hope to be the best possible version of Anthony Mackie and company versus the world.

Again, we won’t know if it hits that bar until February, but while Brave New World will serve as the next mainline entry, there’s still plenty of Marvel to look forward to until then. Season three of What If…? is due out in December, following last season’s release schedule of a daily episode release starting on the 22nd.

It’s not yet clear how many episodes will comprise the third season, but among the details we do know is an episode starring Red Guardian, an episode where the Avengers pilot mechs Power Rangers-style, a musical episode featuring Agatha Harkness, and a Western episode featuring Shang-Chi. So far, no details about a fishing episode, much to the presumable dismay of Mackie.
